Alcohol and breastfeeding
« on: April 04, 2007, 19:07:34 pm »
I feel silly asking this, but...
My DS 16 months and we are down to one feed, first thing in the morning 7am.  My question now is if I have a few cocktails the night before, do I need to be pumping at some point before I breastfeed again?  Everything I read and heard was that if you can feel the alcohol, then the LO can too, but what if you can't feel it by the time they feed next, ie next morning?
TIA!

PS -I just wanted to say I wish I had found you guys when I first had DS as I had sooo many problems breast feeding!  I am so glad I stuck with it though, it can be tough, but it's worth it!

:)  Thanks for the kind words.  BW is a wonderful family.

In regards to the alcohol, it's the same as driving a car really.  It all depends on weight but the average is that one drink stays in you 2.5-3 hrs.  So if you have two drinks, you should wait 6 hrs to bf, etc.  But this is just a rough guide.  (so if they are martinis..... well, maybe you should pump.  LOL)

You do not need to pump out milk.  Milk gets reabsorbed into your system so pumping and dumping doesn't really do anything other than keep your supply up.  HTH

Thanks Jodie, it does help.  Last night I actually had a quick night out and had a margaritas that must've been all tequila, b/c it snuck up on me.  And it just got me thinking...
I appreciate the response!
