how short can the morning nap be when switching to one nap
« on: April 05, 2007, 01:28:15 am »
Hi, ds is just about 11 months and his wake times are increasing so that his am nap doesn't start until 10:30 sometimes.  If I let him sleep, he will usually sleep 1.5 to 2.5 hours in the am but then obviously he won't take his pm nap until very late.  So, I started cutting his nap back to 1 hour.  But now even that seems like too much b/c he is fighting his pm nap.
Should I continue to cut back his morning nap even though he seems to want to sleep for awhile?  I thought that anything less wasn't really restorative so I was hesitant to cut it back anymore.   Or do I push his am nap later and just try to get him a catnap in the pm?

thanks, Kim

hi Kim
we were cutting back the am nap by 11 months for the same reasons as you. I too found that a 1 hr nap still gave us problems so I cut it back to 45 mins. This was ok for a few weeks, then we went to 40 mins, then a few weeks later 30, now we are on 20-25! It seems to be a very gradual process with constant tweaking needed to keep those naps going successfully. You could try pushing the am nap later and going for a catnap in the afternoon but many of us have found that lo just refuses the catnap so you end up with a very overtired baby by bedtime.
Why don't you join us over on the 2-1 nap transition thread at the tope of the Naps board? Everyone there is going through the same thing and has lots of good advice to give!

Ours dropped down to 20 minutes, then the long nap after no more than two hours of wake time.

thanks!  So  you both wake your lo's up after 20 minutes or so?  I know for my first ds I used to time it so he was in the car at that am nap time and let him sleep for 20 minutes but I don't know if I can work it out that way this time.
Thanks for the invite on the 2 to 1 thread, I will check it out.
We are going away for the weekend and then to Florida next week, so maybe I will check it out when we get back.
The traveling should really mess things up :P
