Sippy Cup Recommendations for Breastfed 11 mo
« on: April 23, 2007, 10:54:40 am »
My DS is 11 mo, breastfed and we are STILL, despite offering for months, trying to find a cup/straw cup (whatever!!) that he will take liquid from.

He will suck water from a straw cup (Mothercare brand) but more often than not spits it straight out - like it's part of the game.

I have noticed that the bottle fed babies I know, who are around the same age as my DS are all drinking fine from cups - not sure if it is related, but wondered if anyone had any recommendations for those cups that worked with your breastfed baby.

I am keen to get him to start taking milk from a cup once he is 12 mo as I am going away and need to get his milk into him some way other than from me driect (he refuses a bottle).

Thanks in advance, looking forward to expanding my bulging sippy cup cupboard trying your suggestions!

Shell x

shell hang in there it will happen, i remember feeling the same way with dd1, lucy took nearly a whole cup of water today, keep offering, you can't force it, one thing i remember from with charley is that we drank out of the same cup we were offering charley

this is how charley dropped the boob, i guess i was pregant so i guess the milk wasn't the same may not even have been much left, one day i took her out in the pram early in the morning, put the milk in my water bottle and put a sucker thingo on it and she just drank it, we never looked back, she never looked for the boob, at first she only took small amounts but this time did not last

i must add i am stressing about getting lucy off the boob, i really want to quit at 12 months, only 6ish weeks left, can you believe i went out and got a new maternity bra today, lol

as i can remember someone saying water is not required until they are 12 months old

My child was only BF too and did not take bottle, now he is taking sippy fine, any kind , but we started with Nuby soft sprout sippy. And at the first I even made holes bigger, ruined the cup at the end but get him used to drinking from there. Le me see can I find a pic of this cup

Hi,

I can relate, for my dd #1 she never had a bottle.  So when I went to transition her to a cup it was difficult.  I tried a whole bunch and she just could not figure out how to tip the cup up...since she never had a bottle.  I found the gerber straw cups the best for her.  They have two handles that made it really easy to carry around and had a wide base.  You have to search around for them though..as I don't see them very often anymore.

Hope that helps.

DD was also exclusively breastfed and completely stopped drinking from a bottle (EBM for dreamfeed) at around 5.5 months. We have tried all kinds of sippy cups (she hated the Avent sippy cups btw...and never could get water out of them)...in the end what has worked the best for us are the Nuby 'Grip and Sip' which comes with a straw, for her to drink on her own.  I think the straw makes it easier for breastfed babies (?) After meals I assist her by giving sips of water (as much as she needs) in a regular silver cup that was my mothers when she was a baby (has no handles looks like a minature glass, but it is all silver) to get her trained at drinking out of a reg. glass.  She has been using this for a long time and although I will not give it to her to drink from on her own (as she will spill all of the contents on the floor), she is pretty good at it now (no spills down her mouth).  :)

Good Luck!

I started my EBF DS (at 7 months) on the same cup as the one Efka posted....Worked like a charm and within the month he was drinking from all sorts of cups...

I do think it depends on the child though...My DD is about 7.5 months and is still struggling....

good luck
