10 month old baby crying at nap time
« on: April 13, 2007, 14:01:59 pm »
My son has always been such a good sleeper!  The past few days, he's giving me a really hard time with naps.  His first tooth broke through and now he's working on his second.  However, he still slept soundly with tooth #1 so I'm not sure if teething is the issue.  he's mostly fine all day long personality-wise, except he's tired :(  He's waking a few times at night to fuss but goes back to sleep on his own.  This is his routine.  He'll be 11 months on the 23rd.

7:30ish wake up and eat breakfast
9:30 bottle
9:45 nap (he fusses until 10:30, then takes 45 min nap)
12:00 lunch
1:30 bottle
2:00 nap (he fusses until 2:15 and then takes 45 min nap)
3:00 snack
5:00 dinner
6:00 our dinner so he picks on our food
7:00 bath, bottle, bed (by 7:45 the latest)

Like I said, he's waking a few times at night, but gets himself back to sleep.  But just taking two 45 min naps :(  Any suggestions?

today he did the same this morning....cried until he passed out at 10:30 am.  Woke up at 11:00 am crying his head off.  I put him in at 2:00 and he went right to sleep without a peep, but then woke up 45 mins later screaming his head off again :(  This is NOT like him!

There are two possibilities, I think:

1. is teeth - teething often throws sleep out of whack. Is it really upset crying, like he's in pain? Have you tried any teething meds yet?

2.
My son has always been such a good sleeper!  The past few days, he's giving me a really hard time with naps.
This often indicates a growth spurt leading to being able to cope with longer awake times - are you watching his tired signs? Do you think he could handle small increases in A times?
Caroline :)

I would be inclined to say he is extending his A time and needs his nap time adjusting!!! only because my ds goes down for naps great but when i have had to change his schedule he will cry when i put him in the cot, so once i realised i moved his naptime back a little

I've been giving him teeth meds and it doesn't seem to help the naps.  I'll continue to do that just in case though.

Last night he woke up around 5:30 am.  He didn't cry but made noises.  Then went back to sleep around 6 am and woke up at 8:30 this morning!  I put him in at 10:00 am, his regular nap time-- my mistake.  Its now 11:05 and he's still playing!  I am actually going to go get him and give him one nap today.  What a screwed up day!

I am wondering about more awake time as well.  I guess I hate to adjust it because he's going later and my daughter is moving earlier (her nap is interfereing with her falling asleep at night) so we're going to be changing everything at once!

I think he definitely needs more awake time. When dd was that age she suddenly increased her A times without warning and started taking ages to go to sleep, just as you describe. If I put her down too early for a nap, she would play and play in her cot, and end up not going to sleep at the time I sholud have put her down, but staying awake longer, eventually getting overtired, and having a rubbish short nap.
If he's taking until 10.30 to fall asleep from being put down at 9.45, then I would keep him up till 10.15-10.20ish. Hopefully that will mean he takes a decent nap. Then depending on how that goes you may want to extend his A time before the 2 nap a little too.

So this morning I woke him at 7:30 and put him down at 10:30...he took a 45 min nap again!  Should I even extend it longer?  If I extend it longer, its going into one nap a day territory?  I'm thinking of putting him down at 11:00 and then just giving a catnap in the late afternoon?  I hate to make ANY change though if this is all just due to teething?

when you put him down at 10.30, did he go straight to sleep, or fuss for ages? Was he overtired, or not tired? Did he wake happy or crying?
What happened in the afternoon? Did you extend his A time then too? Did he have a longer nap?
He is at the age where he may well start to show signs of transitioning to 1 nap. Bear in mind that for most lo's this takes months- we started the transition at 10.5 months and at 15 months are still not quite done! For most lo's the first thing to do is shorten the am nap to ensure you get a good pm nap. Maybe he is doing this all by himself?
But also bear in mind that any change in routine usually takes a few days to a week to have an effect on their body clock/ sleeping habits so give it some time- don't expect miracles immediately!

At 10:30 he fussed and then fell asleep around 10:45.  He didn't cry just fuss.  Then he woke up at 11:15ish crying.  I went and got him.  Put him down at 2:30  for the second nap and he cried for 20 mins and finally fell asleep at 2:50.  he woke up 1.5 hours later crying bloody murder.

I really have a hard time between telling if they are overtired or just not tired.  My daughter is 3 and I still can't tell!

He seems ok now -- not cranky or anything, but yawning already at 5:00 pm
