What to do about E when baby wakes too early from nap?
« on: April 30, 2007, 04:23:09 am »
I have my baby on a 3-hour EASY. Sometimes she will take too short of a nap to reach the next feeding 3 hours from the previous one. In order to follow the EASY sequence, is it still best to feed her right when she wakes or to try to hold her off until it has been 3 hours?

Here's her routine:
6:45/7 Wake for day, Eat
7:50ish Wind down for nap
8:15ish Sleep
Often wakes at 9:00/9:30
10 Eat
11ish Sleep (usually on the go due to having a toddler also)
Sometimes wakes at 12/12:30 pm
12:45 pm Eat
1:50ish Wind down for nap
2/2:15 Sleep
Often wakes at 3:30ish
3:30/4 Eat
5:15ish Catnap sometimes (she tends to be very alert around this time)
6 Eat (cluster feed)
6:45ish Sometimes Sleep
7:15 Bath (on some nights)
7:30/8 Eat (2nd cluster feed)
8:30ish Asleep for the night
10:30/11 Dreamfeed
2am-ish Eat
5-ish Eat
OR
3:30/4ish Eat

in general, if she can wait, let her wait.
if she's crying and you think it's hunger, feed her.
at her age she can be hungry sooner than after 3 hrs but she may also be ready for going 3 hrs between the feeds. you just have to watch her closely.
you're BFing, right?

I am wondering if it is OK to to EASA for 45 minute-1 hr nappers?  My 8 week old ds will not sleep until the next feed (3 hr EASY, bf).  I can usually get him back to sleep once but still won't nap much longer than an hour.  But I am afraid that is keeping him awake too long.  Suggestions?

Shanlbc: Can you post your routine?
-Your lo may be waking early due to an increase of A time.
However, to answer your question, YES!  There are some days where you will have A time before the next feed and that's ok.  You may have to put him down right after the feed and that's fine.  He is still really young and will get on a more stable routine in a few weeks.  Just keep trying your best so that he knows what's coming next and so that you can get some A time.   ENJOY! :D

Thanks so much for your response!  Here is our routine--it has been pretty regular for the past few of days.

Wake/Feed   6:00am      He is a quick feeder
Activity        6:30-7:20   Very low key/walking around the house, sitting quietly
Wind down   10 min       he falls asleep very easily and usually does not get back up for at least 45min
Sleep           7:30-9:00  that's obviously our goal; if it doesn't happen I keep trying for at least 30 min which
puts us at a 45 min deficit

When he wakes up early, sometimes we take a walk, sometimes I try to play with him, sometimes I buckle down and feed him a half an hour early.

This cycle repeats for the whole day (eat @ 9, 12, 3) until late afternoon--I try to cluster at 5:30 and 7:30, during which times I am only looking for catnaps (he is very fussy after these); then bath and bed at 8/8:30.  He has been waking up a few minutes before the dream feed.  Then he will wake at around 2am and not again until 6:00am.

He was very congested the past week so we took him in to the pedi.  Turns out he is congested due to reflux and even had an ear infection--so he is on Prevacid and Omnicef.  Because of that, I have been doing a bit of accidental parenting the past two days, and when he wakes after 45 min, I have rocked him for 5-10 minutes and then put him back down.  I was so concerned about him getting enough rest to fight the infection, I just wanted to make sure he slept. To be truthful, it has worked like a dream today.  For the first time ever he took two great naps, one decent one, and acceptable catnaps.

I go in every nap after 35 min and wait for him to stir--I place my hands on his body but he starts tossing his head back and forth.  He HATES pat/shh--sometimes I sing to him but he almost always starts wailing so I have to pick him up anyway.  He will not go back into the crib unless he mostly asleep.  I tried w2s once but that was very traumatic for both of us so I really don't want to go through that again.

What do you think are appropriate activity times for a baby his age--now 8 1/2 weeks?
