Needs more awake time before bed - when to nap?
« on: May 11, 2007, 17:25:47 pm »
LO is 16.5 months old. We've been on a 1 nap routine for about 4-6 weeks now. It's been going really well! Our new problem is that he's now needing 5-5.5 hours A time before bed, instead of 4.5 hours.  I've been waking him from his nap at 3:15 to preserve a 7:30/7:45 bedtime. But now, it's causing us to have an 8/8:15 bedtime. For some reason, he's having 12 hour nights, so that means an 8:15-8:30 awake, and then I don't put him down for nap until 1.

I'm wondering should I put him down for nap earlier - like 12:15/12:30 to get him to wake earlier, and then keep our 7:30 bedtime, or should I start waking him in the morning earlier?  I'm worried if I put him down for an earlier nap that he won't sleep as long b/c he won't be tired enough. Has anyone tried this?

How does this work? Do they just keep having later bedtimes, or do they gradually shorten that nap? He's been sleeping 2-2.5 hours, closer to 2.5.  Some days he sleeps 14.5 hours! But, this may be short lived as he is teething right now, and is always sleepier then.

The best advice I got after I made the switch was to have 5.5-6  hours of activity time between naps and bedtimes.

It really is up to you how you want to do this to fit into your schedule, but my ideal is:
7.30am wakeup
12-2.30pm nap
7-7.30pm bedtime.

It always worked for us.
I always woke her from her nap at 2.30pm as it would spoil her bedtime, but some manage to get them to bed after allowing them to nap until 3.30pm, but it was definitely too late for Alex.
I never had an issue with the morning as if she hadn't woken by 7.30am then I would wake her anyway as I need to start work at 8am.

OK, that sounds good. Guess I'm going to have to start setting my alarm!  :'(
