12 month old wakes up earlier now
« on: May 06, 2007, 14:54:00 pm »
Hi everyone, this is my 1st posting in the toddler section.
My LO is 12 months old in a few days and was waking around 7.30-8am for a long while but over the last couple of weeks has started a much earlier wake up of 5.40, then 6.20 then has settled on a 6.30am wake up now.I posted on the bottle feeding as I thought it was related to swapping from formula to cows milk, but even after increasing her food intake, shes still waking at 6.30am.Heres her current schedule;

6.30am   wake & bottle
9am        breakfast
10am      sleep for 1 hr 15
11.30am lunch
2pm        snack
3.30pm   sleep for 1 hr
4.30pm   cooked meal
7pm        bed

I tried earlier bedtime of 6.30pm and a later one of 8pm, but she still wakes at exactly the same time.Do you think she is in a transitional period of going from 2 to 1 naps?

Quick update 7.5.07 ; This morning she woke even earlier at 6am, after being put to bed at 7.15pm and falling asleep by 7.45pm.

I think you are right about the tansition to 2 to 1 nap
--sometimes it is the night sleep that changes rather than the naps.  I would try pushing the am back a bit to see if that improves things--she may just need that longer period of awake time before her nap.

At the moment she is awake 3-3.5 hours from waking up until her 1st nap, do you think I should add 15 mins so shes awake longer? If I do this, her pm nap will become later, does that mean her bedtime will need to be a little later?

You could also try cutting the morning nap to 45mins to still be able to get an afternoon nap if you are finding that the longer A times in the morning are causing earlier wake ups or night wakings

This morning she woke at 5.20am! I left her in her cot babbling with the odd cry out until 6.30am, then I got her up and gave her a milk feed. This meant it was difficult keeping her up for a long activity and after 2 yawns, I had to put up down for a nap at 8.55am.Its getting earlier every day and at this rate, I'll be back to night feedings.

Yesterday  I cut her morning nap down to 30 mins, she was fine when I went in the room to wake her.Anyway, then she had a longer afteroon nap of 1 hr 15mins and I put her to bed at 7.15pm.
This morning she had a little 20 sec. cry at 5.45am, but went straight back to sleep by herself till 7am.I'm really happy with that and hope it continues and is not just a coincidence.I'll let you know if it continues this well.
