Great sleeper, suddenly waking once a night.
« on: May 14, 2007, 23:33:25 pm »
Hi all, well it's been a while since i've posted on this site as we have not had any sleep problems......until now.
My 13 month old little girl has been sleeping from 7 - 7 without a peep. I do put her to bed with a dummy but if it falls out she still stays asleep. A couple of weeks ago she was teething again (about 4 teeth coming out at once), and she would wake up once a night and all i had to do was put the dummy in or some teething relief gel and she would fall asleep again. Lately she has been waking once a night and she talks/whines but does not cry, i know if i leave she will fall asleep again, but this can take up to 10-20 minutes, so instead i take the easy way out and put the dummy in. I'm just afraid this has now become a habit, how can i solve this problem and get my little girl to sleep through the night again?
It isn't a major inconvenience but i really think her waking and talking/whining  has now become a habit.

I think if she isn't crying then you shouldn't go in to soothe her.  There are many times that my 16 month old wakes and talks to herself for a few minutes, or even lets out a little wimper and then goes back to sleep.  I think going in will eventually interfere with her ability to put herslef back to sleep.

I think you're right it's jsut that sometimes it takes up to 20 minutes and i can't fall asleep until she does. I'll see how we go.

If you are using a monitor turn it down so you will hear less of the talking and only the real crying.  It is hard to not rush in but in the long run you want her to know how to go back to sleep.  It is normal to wake several times in the night.  As adults we wake for water, to use the restroom or to fluff our pillow, try to think of her waking in that way.

Keep us posted.
