15 month old naps
« on: May 17, 2007, 15:49:56 pm »
Our 15 month old daughter only takes a 1-2 hour nap in the morning and we have to somewhat fight to get her to take her afternoon nap.  Cause of course if she doesn't get enough sleep she is cranky.  Anyone have any ideas on how to stop her from fighting to go to sleep?  We don't read to her quite yet cause she just screams and will take the book from us.

Most lo's at this age will refuse an afternoon nap if they are too rested from their morning nap. The usual solutino is to shorten the morning nap, say to 45mins and this should ensure a good pm nap.
Check out the 2- nap transition thread at the top of the board as everyone there is going through the same thing

Emma---this is our routine(varies sometimes)

7:00am or so--wake up, breakfast
11:00 or so--nap
12:30 or so--lunch
3:30 to4:30--nap
6:00-6:30--dinner
9:00--start the bedtime routine(usually falls asleep @ 10p)

Does anyone maybe have any ideas on a better routine?

bedtime should really be earlier than this, perhaps if you brought bedtime forward you could stretch out the morning gradually making nap time 12pm till 2pm bed for 7 to 7.30 pm

my ds is in bed asleep now he napped from 12pm till 1.45 today it varies due to daycare, he will still have 2 naps when at home and be asleep for 7.15pm, he will nap 11 to 11.45 in the am and 3 till 4 in the pm when at home i am trying to get to 1 nap at the minute but he is too tired.........
funny how he can do 1 nap at nursery though ::)

Emma that's exactly what happened with Sophie- she transitioned at nursery about a month before she transitioned at home! I think it's really common, they are too nosy to sleep at nursery with all that's going on around them  ::)

Emma----Thats what I was thinking too.  But since we have allowed this bed-time routine to go on for a while.  It is gonna take some time to probably train her to go to bed earlier.  We both work until between 3p&5pm.  We have my mom watch her for us while we are at work.  So I have been thinking that we have screwed her routine up from the beginning now we are gonna try to fix it almost 8 months later.  Do you have any suggestions how to gradually do this?

I would just gradually push the am nap back a little over a period, just by 15 mins at a time and perhaps shorten the pm nap to like a catnap, once you get the 1st nap where you need it at say 12pm wake at 2pm then do your usual routine missing out the pm nap altogether, normal wind down etc and put to bed earlier, you may find for a little while that she thinks its a nap and wakes after an hour but just resettle as you would normally if she woke early......

does that make sense

Kathryn ds has been on one nap at nursery from 10 months i am certain that is why we had night wakings again at 10months he was so overtired, he is still a cranky pants now after nursery but i just put him to bed earlier he was in bed for 6.15 tonight and i didnt pick him up till 5.15pm from nursery ::) so not much quality time in the evenings at the minute but this should improve once he gets a bit older and more able to cope with less sleep in the day,,,, well i hope so :(

Well, Emma we have changed her bed time to between 8-830p and so far its going pretty good.  Its something new for everyone.  But all in all its going pretty well.  Its only been 2 days so far.
