Any other children SCREAM at naptime?
« on: May 21, 2007, 17:39:55 pm »
I've been doing EASY since DS was born, now six weeks old.  Naps were great (3-2 hour naps) and my routine is consistent....

7am wake him up
E
A diaper, no real stimulation just sitting around
7:45am go up to room before yawn, swaddle, turn on white noise and as soon as I turn off the light and sit down with him he starts SCREAMING.  inconsolable screaming.

It use to be he'd calm down with a little bouncing, lay in crib with eyes fluttering, shh pat for ten minutes and he'd be out for two hours.

NOW... the screaming lasts forever.  As soon as I put him in the crib, even if my arms are still around him, he freaks out.  Will not fall asleep.  I know he's tired, he's yawning and eyes won't stay open.  What is going on?

Honestly, I keep rereading the book and it only serves to depress me as it says I must be accidental parenting if he's fussing at sleep times and waking up after 10 minutes.  I swear I'm not.

Also, I'm confused about PU/PD.  I know not to do it before three months, but how is that different from picking them and soothing them when they cry as the book recommends before 3 months?

One last point, I have considered reflux as he often has wet burps with cottage cheese like milk spitup.  So I have inclined his mattress.  But if he did have reflux wouldn't he ALWAYS be uncomfortable lying down?  He doesn't seem to have a problem at changing time, activity time, or when I'm lying next to him.

Hi Capegirl. Welcome to the boards.

Yes, I had one who SCREAMED at all sleep times. For like 20 minutes every time until around 6 weeks.  :-\  When we sorted out A times and started sleep training with shh/pat it got better in a hurry, but boy it was hard, and I thought it would always be that way!

Your A times seem good, we were doing around 45 minutes at that age.

Do you think he could be a bit more aware of his surroundings now and getting overstimulated? Bouncing can be overstimulating to babies, especially spirited ones. Bouncing can also aggravate reflux. Tracy recommends holding a very young baby still during wind down, in addition to darkening the room, swaddling, and using a shhh/shhh noise to calm them if they cry. (The "Four S" routine.)

My dd did have mild reflux and she seemed fine during changing, A time, baths, etc. It was just during feeds and at night when it was a problem. Fortunately she outgrew it around 4.5 months. Inclining the mattress did help (although she often ended up in a pile at the bottom), as well as holding upright for a while after feeds. Most babies spit up though, it doesn't always mean reflux.

RE: pu/pd, if your lo gets really worked up during pat/shush, you can pick up and comfort, but then put back down and try to continue calming in the crib. It's just *repeated* picking up/putting down that's not recommend for such a young lo, as that can be overstimulating. My lo is almost 6 months and still can't handle repeated picking up/putting down.

HTH!
