Help My 19 month old will not sleep through the night
« on: May 16, 2007, 15:06:26 pm »
Hello,

I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown.  I have not have a full 6 hours of sleep in 3 years between being pregnant sleep training and have it not work except for at the most a week at a time.  For the past month and a half our DD will not sleep through the night she wants us to stay in the room with her and sit in the rocking chair.  This happens 2-4 times a night and sometimes she will scream bloody murder until we take her out of her crib and then she will just not go back to sleep.   1 week ago we were on vacation but this was happening way before the vacation and Thursday we need to go to Cleveland to see my Mother in law.  I will post her schedule and if anyone had any advice please help because I don't know what else to do.  Do you let her scream?

7:00-7:30 wake
800 breakfast
10:00 snack
12:00-12:15 lunch
12:30-1:00 nap 2-21/2 hours
2:30-3:30 play go for a walk
5:00 little snack
6:00-6:30 dinner
7:00 bath play with brother, read books rock a bit
7:30-8:30 bed
12:00am-5:00am  wake up through out the night

God it sounds like you are really having a rough time!
First of all have you made sure there is nothing physically wrong with her? Ear infection, throat etc? They will always cause problems with sleep!
If not though, I think sleep training is your only option but maybe in a more ‘removed’ capacity if you know what I mean. I wouldn’t let her scream, personally – that just seems too harsh on all of you (although god knows I have been tempted myself loads of times!). I think the gradual withdrawal where you are in the room but not interacting might work ok. There’s info on this site for that. I had problems with my DS also so have tried a few techniques! But if she doesn’t want you to leave the room that might work. Then once she’s used to that, you could do WIWO or something. BUT it will take time and your patience WILL be tried incredibly if she is screaming! But if you do it gradually she will know you’re there so I don’t think it will do any damage. You can try shush-ing while you are in the room but DON’T MAKE EYE CONTACT!! These little ones are to adept at finding your Achilles heel so be warned!!
Well that’s what I would do – I’m loads of others will give you other ideas. Just pick the one that you think suits you all best and stick with it. Being consistent can be the key to successful sleep training, regardless of which method you choose.
Oh and good luck and loads of {{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}

I agree, that you need to back to basics and sleep train her again. If you can't stand the screaming, then do GW, otherwise I would do wi/wo or pd. She might very well scream but try not to take her out of the cot, try to soothe her in the cot. Try rubbing her back, shushing her, etc... and when she is quiet, stop. She will eventually get the point that she is to go to sleep and if/when she wakes at night, she is to return to sleep....

Also try an earlier bedtime for about 4 days or so. Around 7-7.30pm

Pd - put down. So you don't get them out of the cot just put them down and leave.

I would wait until you come back to start fresh

What is GW?  I think we are going to start tonight.  Now if she wakes in the middle of the night I just go in there and sit in there and try not to pick her up right?
