Help -- we're being held hostage!
« on: May 25, 2007, 16:16:08 pm »
I'm not sure what happened (!!!), but my 21 mo. DD suddenly has major sleep issues.  She has been resisting sleep both at night and for naps.  (I just went back to work after a maternity leave and now DH is home with her and her 3.5 month old sis.  Not sure if it's the transition that's causing this -- she seems to be struggling with SA.)

We've used WI/WO in the past, but it does not seem to be working this time around.  When we try, she screams bloody murder and is absolutely unconsolable even during the WI stage, with no end in sight.  And to make matters worse, she's figured out how to get out of her crib.  I can't tell if it's true SA, or just a power struggle. (???

SO, for the past few nights/days, we've stayed in the room with her until she falls alseep, which can take 2-3 hours.  This is especially difficult for dh during the day, with the new baby and all.  (Yesterday he just brought the baby into the room with him until DD1 fell asleep.)  She doesn't cry when we're in the room, but takes a looooong time to settle.  (She's used to falling asleep alone.)  I guess the main problem now is that she EXPECTS us to be in the room with her the whole time she's sleeping.  She's now having several NW, and one of us has to be in there for several hours.  She falls back asleep ok, but wakes as soon as she hears the floor or door squeak (old house).  We're not sure how to get back out of the room.  (The room is too small to move the chair gradually closer to the door.)  Do you think we should stick with this for awhile, or just be really hard core with the WI/WO??  Any advice would be appreciated!  Thanks.

It does sound like SA to me.  How is she during the day?

Could you post her daily routine (wake ups, naps, meal times bedtime)

When My DD went through Seperation Anxiety, she managed to climb from her cot, but she doesn't do it now.  I would put something soft  on the floor incase she tries it again.  I considered moving her to a bed, glad I stuck it out though.
