Hi gang-

My lo loves to sleep with pillows, and I let him for his naps, but I take it away at night.  When is it "safe" to give it to him at night?  the one I currently use is probably 20 years old and very flat.

Sam had a pillow from about 11 months which I know is a bit pushing it. It was a very firm flat foam one. I was more paranoid about fungus and yuk growing in his pillow than overheating or suffocation and used to boil it to death and wash it all the time. Definitely did improve his sleeping though.

Give my little one a pillow at 12 months, really helped her to sleep better; it is not that flat but it is quite soft. Pillows have a lifespan of about 5-7 years so I would buy your little one anew one without all the sweat, dustmites etc....

If your lo sleeps on their side or back on the pillow, should be fine.  If you have a tummy-sleeper they should not be sleeping on a pillow as stomach-sleeping on a pillow is very bad for the neck.

If they want a pillow, that's fine, but there is no actual need for toddlers to have one.  My DD was a tummy-sleeper so actually didn't have a pillow until she was 4yo!
