How can I make him sleep on his own?
« on: June 06, 2007, 10:38:21 am »
Yes I admit. It is my fault. I went to every noise he made during his sleep. Now he doesn't know how to sleep on his own or how to put himself back to sleep.

Last night  I fed him at 3:00 am and then in 30 minutes he woke again. by screaming and grumbling he called us. I didn't go into his roon for 20 minutes then he begann to cry. His daddt went to his room and put his hand on his back like he would do shh-pat. immediately he settled and after 2 minutes he was sleeping.

My lo is 7 mo. and as shh-pat is not working anymore it is not easy to make him sleep either for nap or for bedtime. He is not crying when we put him in his bed but more playing or grumbling or screaming like he is excited.

In case you need our routine. Here it is. It has changed slidely in the last couple of days as I applied the suggestion for early waking and not working shh-pat

6:45 wake and continue to sleep in daddy's arms
7:30 wake up
8:00 BF
10:15 -11:45 sleep
12:00 BF
14:00 - 15:30 sleep
15:30 BF
18:30 BF
bath, bedtime routine
19:00 bed
20:00 sleep
22:00 DF

hi... i admit i'm a little confused by your post.  you say he has problems putting himself to sleep, but those are good nap times..

does he have trouble going down for naps, or just bedtime?  does he always wake at 3am?

First of all sorry for not being able to answer your question before. My pc crashed and ittook time to rebuild it.

Let try to explain what I mean. until few weeks ago we were doing shh-pat both during nap time and bedtime. it was working perfectly. Nap times it was takin 10 minutes and bedtime 20 to 40 minutes. but suddenly one day shh-pat didn't work at bedtime and then the following day shh-pat begun not to work during nap time too. He was not crying he was playing inhis crib and it didn't matter how long I sit at his crib and wait him to get tired and fall asleep on his own. As he wasn't crying I didn't try PU/PD. Since I post the question I'm reading Tracy's first book again (I have all of them) and trying to follow an advise there and trying to spend the step1 in hte rocking chair and before eyes-wide-shot step I was putting him to his crib. It worked first but tonight it didn't work. I don't know what to do.

He is 7 mo old and I believe he is old enough to leave him in his crib so that he can fall asleep on his own without any help.

if he's not crying, you don't do pat/shh either.   :-\  if he's just playing in his crib, you might be lying him down too soon (which i kinda doubt looking at your routine), or he just needs to chill out a little before he does go down to sleep.  you could try extending his winddown in the rocking chair, if that is something that he's used to.  if it's not i'm not so sure i'd start doing it now, as it could be distracting him.
