Question about Apple Juice
« on: June 20, 2007, 16:42:29 pm »
Hi!  I was wondering if apple juice causes constipation at all or does it help the other way.  My DD has constipation a few times a month so I have been giving her plum juice with extra fiber in it.  The problem is it always works too good and she ends up with the runs.  I thought if I gave her another kind of juice it might help without causing this problem.  But I don't want to give her apple juice if it causes constipation.  I seem to remember hearing that is does but I can't remember for sure but I knew you ladies could help me out.

Thanks!
Jenny

Apple juice can go either way - it just depends on the LO. Not the answer you were looking for probably but that's the truth.  ;)

With my DD, apple juice pretty much always makes her GO.  We dilute it quite a bit which helps avoid it working TOO well! One thing that I've found works is to mix in a teaspoon of pureed prunes with applesauce or whatever. This seemed to be a little gentler for her than prune juice/apple juice for some reason. I agree though, I think it really depends on the kid! Pear juice is also a good alternative to apple or plum juice to help with constipation (at least for DD). HTH  :)

One thing you can try is pear juice... If you go with the fibre route, I would give you LO plain water with it.  Pear juice works just like prune j. but is more gentle on the tommy.  You shouldn't have to do both unless your lo is really bad.

My Ds was constipated really badly from 4 months until around 2.5 years (if I didn't constantly stay on top of the situation)  I found fibre and juice was a really strong combo.  If you want more fibre you can also increase fresh fruit.

Pear juice is definitely better than prune juice, unless you want an explosion :-X ;D

Even better would be to get her to eat a nice ripe pear. Then you get the juice and the fibre :)
