6 month old finger food
« on: June 27, 2007, 09:00:59 am »
My lo will trun 6months in a week, already on solids.  My HV says I should try her on finger foods now. Am worried it is not safe and she will choke, I was so anxious about this I did not give my DS finger foods until 1 year old  :-[

Any ideas on safe things I can give her now my imagination is not great? Please bear in mind she cannot have milk products.

TIA xxxx

Ooh Emma, looks like you might benefit from visiting the FAQ post on Baby-led Weaning, and then the BLW Support Thread! From that you'll see that I am going to create a 6-9 month old finger food sticky somewhere in the recipes section in the next few days, and that currently there are a lot of parents adopting this approach with their los, with great success and enthusiasm!

Check them out, and if you have any more queries, post again!

Well, I just risked a very thinly sliced piece of apple, was surprised to watch her gumming it!

My daughter is about a week behind yours so we're thinking about solids soon.  I'm going down the BLW route (as mentioned by Alison) and starting her with finger foods straight away.  I think we'll start with banana, carrot and broccoli as they are all really good ones for her to pick up, hold and gum to death  :)  You could also try toast as that's another god one she can gum/chew.

Def going to offer some veg at dinner time. Just read the back of bread packet as was going to offer toast, but it has soy in it and she is allergic to that too  >:(

I used to give my DS grated strips of apple and pear.  Loved it.  Grating it just made it that bit safer.

im such an idiot, she is allergic to milk and my gran bought me some powdered baby food, said it has no milk in it. Just gave her some and read the packet after, (just wondered if it had added calcium) well guess what the main ingredient milk protein, skimmed milk powder and whole milk powder. Feel so guilty couldcry, she is going to have such a bad belly, milk gives her the runs severely and blood in poo, and terrible tummy pains I could cry, why did I not just read it to be sure. HV said not to worry, keep an eye and it should pass through in 24 hrs  :'( Am bad mum :'(

you are not the first to feed lo something they shouldn't have and you won't be the last! you are not a bad mummy xx
I gave lo Robinson's squash and she had a rash from head to toe for days  :-[
if you can find some bread she can eat then toast fingers with butter on are great- I did these as first finger food and they were a real success. Also it taught dd very early on how to take bites from food, rather than just give her little bits to pop in her mouth.
