Losing interest in bedtime bottle
« on: June 25, 2007, 13:51:26 pm »
Hello

Our DS is 6 months old and a whopping 22 pounds - all in proportion luckily but a big lad nonetheless!

Anyway he's been on solids for a few weeks now, Health Visitor fully aware and involved with decision. His meals look like this:

6am - 6Floz
6.30am - Porridge
10am - Yoghurt
12.00pm - Lunch
2pm - 7Floz
5pm - Tea (Rice and Fruit, Bob the Builder Fromage Frais)
7pm - Anywhere between 3-4Floz
10pm - Anywhere between 4-7Floz

At the 7pm feed , he is thrusting and kicking out and really doesn't want the bottle at all. I've tried winding him etc but doesn't make any difference. He never used to do this but has started in the last 5 days.

Any ideas as to why this is/experiences? It's only at this feed. He still loves his other feeds.

I'm worried he's not getting enough fluids. He's just getting to grips with his beaker but still isn't able to get much from it at the moment.

Thanks

It could be that ds is filling up on solid foods so is not hungry for his bedtime bottle... at 6 months milk is still the primary nutrition for babies, solid foods are for learning what foods are and what to do with them, so that by the time they are needed for nutrition (around 12 months, when milk is insufficient) baby is confident about eating.

Even tho ds is a big boy, you can afford to cut back the amount of solid foods you offer because they have relatively few of the calories or fats needed for his development and to satisfy his hunger, the milk is what he needs, so I'd try this first to see if it encourages him to take his final feed!

Many Thanks for this.

Do you know how many Floz he should be taking a day? I've read between 20 and 30 at this stage and he is getting about 21-25 most days. Perhaps a little less at the moment as he is teething and the bottle is causing discomfort for him.

I think I sussed out what is also contributing last night, he prefers to be sat more upright and lean against my stomach, almost parallel with me if you see what I mean rather than me holding him in my arms! He is seemingly growing up and is not so much of a baby anymore!!
