How much milk for toddlers?
« on: July 19, 2007, 06:11:39 am »
I am panicking as I have just read on our government child and youth health website that toddlers should have around 600ml a day of milk.  Charlotte doesn't have that, I make sure she has 300ml a day plus 100ml of yoghurt.  That's not counting cheese - she would normally have about 20 grams a day at least.  With milk she has 120-150ml calcium-enriched soy milk on cereal, 100ml organic milk for morning tea, 100ml same for afternoon tea, then 100ml yoghurt at some point.  Is that OK or should she have more?  She has been having this since 12 months when we went from breastfeeding to cow's milk.

Our naturopath recommended 16 to 24 oz per day - not sure what that works out to in ml.

Hi - 14 oz (lower 'limit') is about 350ml, so 300ml plus cheese is definitely within the 'boundaries'. However, I have also heard that as long as they have 12oz (approx 300ml), then this is fine too.

TBH, if your LO has a very varied diet, it probably won't matter much, but if you are worried, just try to fit in an extra yoghurt / cheese / milk snack at some point during the day.

Some toddlers are milk 'monstors' - e.g. our DD drinks 20oz in one go in the evening and will also have yoghurt and cheese from time to time - some toddlers really don't seem to like milk and get their needs from yoghurt, cheese, green leafy veg etc etc.

Judge it by the energy and health of your daughter - if she constantly seems lethargic and tired, you might want to revisit her carb / protein mix and you can always try some toddler vitamins for a few months to see if this makes any difference (vitamins need to be tried for at least 3 months to fully assess the impact).
