Scrambled Eggs
« on: September 04, 2007, 12:01:48 pm »
Hi All,
This is my first post..I have been reading for a few months now :) I am from the US and here I am told to never give egg whites to my child under 1yr.  I have an 8.5 mo and am wondering how you all make scrambled eggs without getting any of the white in them? I have cracked them over a strainer but it seems that a little white remains in with the yolk, is this amount OK? We have no history of allergies in our family on either side.

Thanks,
Lilsal

Hi and welcome to the posting side of the boards!

It's nearly impossible to get ALL the little whites out.  I used an egg separator or poured the yolk back and forth between the two shell halves.

Hello,

You could also just boil the egg and then  it is easy to separate the yolk out.

 :)

Thank You for taking the time to reply :)
I thought about the hard boiled thing but it seems that they are so sticky and pasty and that scrambled would be a good finger food!
She started off great with purees but in the last two weeks all of a sudden starts screaming and clenching her fists at me when I go near her mouth with the spoon. I think she wants to do it herself! I have given her breadsticks and broccoli crowns just to play with and she loved it. I also gave her mashed potato on her highchair tray and she palmed the whole pile down!  This morning I gave her a piece of toast with butter on it and she thought that was great, she does gag a lot though and I am so afraid of her choking.. I have so many questions about things that she can eat: can you let me know if I am not posting in the right spot?
Thanks again for your time and help..

eggs....what a joke!

i asked this quack of a pediatrician (not my pedi) about this. he said "egg yolk makes great finger food" and i said, "how can you get ALL the egg white off?" and he did not have an answer for me.

IMO, i would just wait until a year to try them out. each pedi will have a different opinion. there is not a right answer. my pedi said she was laid back about and then her second kid ended up being allergic - no history of allergies! my LO is 10 months old. we gave him pasta (made w/ egg) and some other things w/ cooked (hidden) egg. we did not expose him intentionally. i knew he'd been exposed to egg white and egg yolk so we just gave him scrambled egg this past weekend.  He was fine.

not sure if this was helpful or not!

I couldn't be bothered with the effort involved in separating white from yolk (full-time working mum of 2 - 3 if you count dh ;)) so I waited till Eryn was 12 months and gave her the lot, scrambled and hard-boiled (she won't touch the white of a hard-boiled egg anyway ::)) - if you check out the Finger Foods for Young Babies thread in the Recipes section, you should get some yummy ideas for your lo, there is also the baby-led weaning support thread/sticky for those whose babies don't 'do' purees (for whatever reason) at the top of the main page which shares many ideas and experiences about self-feeding!

HTH?

Thank you for the replies..I took her to the Dr today 'cause I heard her wheezing on and off the the last couple of days.. well when we got there was I shocked when they told me she had a double ear infection and a sore swollen throat :-\  the wheezing I guess I was hearing because she was congested, more then likely from teething they said.. no wonder why she wasn't wanting to eat all of a sudden!!

My dd is just over a year old and the doctor still told us to hold off on giving eggs because of possible allergies.  Neither dh or I have any food allergies, but the desire to give her eggs has not taken over me yet so it doesn't matter.  I would probably wait until at least a year to be on the safe side.

Thank You`

Does this apply to adding eggs to foods like meatloaf, meatballs and other foods of the like?
I also wanted to try pancakes or waffles but I see on the pancake batter box it says it contains eggs.
In the recipe section here I also see that some of you are using egg in your recipes I am assuming your little ones are older?  I will hold off on the scrambled egg thing but what about the things I mentioned?

if you know your LO has not been exposed to egg yet, i would use only egg yolk or a subsitutute when cooking. however, egg is in everything. i didn't worry so much and gave my LO pasta, etc do what you feel comfortable with or what your pedi recommends.

Actually, I have given my dd foods with egg in them.  It is kind of hard to avoid that.  I just haven't given her plain eggs yet.  HTH.  :)
