stick with set time for naps when overtired?? (2.5 y.o.)
« on: August 19, 2007, 17:19:17 pm »
Hi-
Looking at some of the posts here, i've read a few times that it's a good rule of thumb to have the nap (when there is one nap) 5-6 hours after morning wake up, and bedtime 5-6 hours after wake up from nap.  We're in a sleep mess right now with our 2.5 year old - dealing w/ separation anxiety, and now a real bad overtired streak, etc.  We're trying to catch up on sleep.  A month ago when things were fine she was sleeping from about 7:30-6:30 with a nap at 12:30-2 (give or take).  Now, we've been putting her down around 6:15, but she hasn't been falling asleep until after 7 (overtired i guess?  taking FOREVER to fall asleep - we know this b/c we've been doing GW and have been sitting in her room).  Then she's been waking a few times in the night and often is awake for quite a while - 30 to 60 mins at a time - then often wakes up super early.  this morning it was 5:00.  SO - i guess my question is...what time should her nap be?  is it better to stick to a set time in the day or just go 5-6 hrs from wake up, even if it means it's 11:00 one day and 12:30 the next...  I always thought it was better to stick to a time, but then today, she's been up for almost 8 hrs (5 am to 1:00 pm) :o and she's SO overtired (it's 1:00 and she's still awake, although my DH ended the routine 20 mins ago - couldn't get her down any earlier today b/c we were gone).  Any thoughts here?
Thanks!  Sarah

My 2 cents.
If her wake-ups are very variable and if she's sometimes had a tough night I'd go with the 5-6hrs after plan rather than stick to a set time.
I think set times are better if wake-ups are in a fairly small window and if the nights are fairly predictable.

Makes sense.  Let's say tomorrow we have an early nap b/c of an early morning - and she happens to sleep long during the nap (her naps have been around 1 hr - used to be more like 1.25 or 1.5) - should i just let her sleep?  I'm thinking yes, b/c bedtime would still be a ways off anyway, and this would help her break the overtired cycle?  fingers crossed.....

If it's an early nap I would definitely let her just sleep.
Good Luck
