what is going on?
« on: July 19, 2007, 18:44:52 pm »
For the past 3-4 days during a feed my baby-11 weeks old-will take a few sucks and then come off, take a few sucks and come off.  Sometimes she will do some good sucks and swallows but a lot of the time she just keeps coming off and on the whole time.  She will even start crying-i'm not sure if its because she is frustrated or because something is bothering her.  I have tried breast compression but that didnt' seem to keep her on.
this is becoming quite frustrating.  what is going on and what should i do?

Does she do any good feeds?  Have you tried giving her EBM from a bottle with the same reaction? or different reaction?

yes she does have good feeds when she is really tired-the feed right before she goes to sleep and all the night feeds are good feeds. sometimes when she gets up from a nap and is really tired then she eats well.

What does your EASY schedule look like?

MY LO was doing the same thing.  It almost seemed like she was doing getting frustrated when she was getting too hungry.  I did the following:
1.  Stroke her and talk to her in soothing tones while she is eating.  This has sometimes required me to put her down and get my own grip as well so that I could continually give her a soothing environment.
2.  I started feeding her in her own room, always so she wouldn't get stimulated by the environment and could focus on eating.
3.  I darkened said room so she didn't have as much to look at.

Are you feeding her at a set time?  Or are you feeding her when she asks for it?  or when she cries for it?  Does she have A time before she eats?  Or is it straight away from a nap?  How old is your LO?

Not that it helps when you are in amongst it, but my LO did exactly the same thing at around the same age. I switched to double sided feeding and that seemed to help for awhile, but I think he just grew out of it.

Hi there, I've been thinking about you a lot....

Have you checked out the reflux board?  It COULD be that....My lo was a nightmare to nurse and her sleep was really really really wretched until we started the right med for reflux...

Check out this reflux 101 link and let me know if it sounds a bit like your lo... :-\

My LO did the same thing for about a week - it was distressing.  She'd fuss and fuss while drinking and seem to want more and latch on and then fuss more.  It was tough when we were out visiting and it would happen, I didn't know what to say to those we were visiting to explain her behaviour...but...as with many things, it passed...for the most part.  On occasion she still does it and I still have to go through whether she is being distracted, whether she has to burp or whether to switch breasts - the last one seems to be the answer most of the time.  For that reason I'm led to think it's a growth spurt and they are drinking faster and emptying out the breast before the breast can replenish and so when they go on the other breast they are often much more content because they are getting some, and getting it faster.
