short am nap not working
« on: August 03, 2007, 15:06:54 pm »
OK, so I tried the last few days to wake the twins (10 months) early from their am nap in order to get a longer pm nap out of them. Well, they were OK, but not quite their bouyant selves. They went down well 3 hrs later for their pm nap, woke at the 30 min mark crying/whining, but put themselves back to sleep within 10 min. Problem was dd was so tired by 6pm (they slept from 1:30-3:00), and we couldn't put her down until 6:30--they share a room and this is how things have to be because of timing with dh getting home from work and helping with bedtime. Dd woke between 2-2:30am, crying. She put herself back to sleep. Then ds woke at 5:35, which was normal, except that he, of course, woke dd, who sounded like she could have slept a little longer.

So today, after their 5:35 wake up, I put them down around 9:15, about 3hr 45min after waking- which we have been doing for two weeks now and so far has worked (keep in mind I just started waking them early from naps 3 days ago). But then dd woke up crying hard after 30 min- not like her- and she woke up ds (they sleep in separate rooms for naps). Normally if anyone is to wake early it's ds. So I got them up, thinking that we could just go down for a pm nap earlier, like around 1:00. WELL! Dd started to tantrum around 15 min later. I gave her a bottle thinking it would help. It helped for about 5 min. Then both dd and ds started crying hard, to the point that holding them wouldn't soothe them. And I have two at once so it's hard to do, anyway. So I put them back to bed. 20 min hard crying and they are now asleep.

SOooo what I'm thinking is I will let them sleep as long as they need in the am, and go for a catnap in the pm. Trouble is I don't know when to put them down for a nap in the am, to ensure they sleep longer, but don't encourage early wakeups--or earlier than 5:30am-- or cause them to be overtired and wake at 30 min.

Hi there, sorry you haven't had any replies yet  :-\

It sounds to me like they are overtired. Can you post their routine?

At their age my DD was doing:

7am – Wake
7.30am –Breakfast
9am – Milk 200mls
10am – Sleep 1-1.5hr
12.30pm – Lunch
2.30pm – Sleep 45mins
4pm – Snack
5.30 - Dinner
6.15pm – Bath
7pm –Milk 200mls, Brush teeth, Story, Bed by 7.30pm

I aslo found shortening her AM nap didn't work it made her cranky and still resulted in a short PM nap.

Here's our routine:

5:30am wake
6:00 bottle
7:30 breakfast
9:15/9:30 nap (this one has been all over the place, anywhere from 45 min to 2 hrs; I'd say the average is about 1 hr)
10:30/11:00 bottle
12:30 lunch
anywhere from 1:30-2:30 nap; depends on when they woke up from am nap; length is anywhere from 45min-1.5 hr; I try to give them at least 3hrs A time

3:30 bottle
5:00 dinner
5:30 bath, walk, bottle
6:30 asleep (we've been doing 6:30 bedtime for over a week now, and they get close to 11 hrs)

Hi
I would say that maybe that first A time is a little long at 3.75-4hrs, try bringing it back to 3.15-3.5hrs.  My DD was only doing 3hrs A time in the morning at this age.  Her A times went 3hrs, 3.15-3.5, then whatever was left with the day but bed was always no later than 7pm.  At this time she would generally wake between 6.30 & 7am.  Generally her am nap would be 1-1.15hrs and her pm nap 1.15-1.5hrs.

Until you absolutely run out of day with A times being long and still getting 2 fairly good naps I wouldn't mess with them by cutting them short.  Only if the combined A and nap times are making the day say 13hrs, which doesn't leave enough time for at least 11.5hr night, would I then start cutting back the am nap.  I only chose the am nap as this was the one which was getting shorter slowly on its own, her pm nap was always best.  Plus ultimately when they transition from 2 naps to 1 nap, it is the pm nap which you want to preserve.

Hope thats helpful

Yes, that's very helpful. It is just what they did yesterday- same amount of nap times you said your lo took. OK, I'll cut back the am A time and see what happens.
Thank you
