Beyond 4hrs
« on: August 08, 2007, 13:20:57 pm »
What comes after 4 hr EASY?  Can anyone tell me where to find the info, either on line or in the books?  Amelia has been doing wonderful with 4 hr EASY (when she's home) but she seems to be able to stay up for longer than 2 hrs and she's starting to take less at bottle feeds (which may be in part to solids).  She's starting to show the signs for extending EASY, I would simply like to know for sure what the next step is "supposed" to be.

Thanks so much!

Hi Pandabean. To be honest, I would not extend the feed times longer than 4 hours apart if you can, purely because babies have tiny tummies and obviously need feeding regularly. Some babies WILL go more than 4 hours, but this is more at the age of around 9/10 months.

Obviously the reason your DD as you said, is decreasing the bottles due to solids.  This is normal, and not usually a cause for concern, but obviously you want to ensure that she is getting more milk than solids, does she eat big meals of solids, as this may be the reason she can manage longer and not fit the milk in?

Now, in terms of EASY, it is obviously not a schedule, but a routine in which things are done in the same order each day.  Sometimes it is not possible to always get EASY, especially is your lo is going a little further between feeds. You would then get something lik EASYA IYKWIM?  I would forget the idea of trying to have a set EASY every day at set times, and just make sure you get the Eat and sleep right, as they will affect the amount of activity time she has.

I hope that makes some sense to you, just work with your babe as closely to the EASY pattern as you can and you will be fine.  My lo is older than yours and my EASY which is quite a loose EASY goes like this

E 8am
A
S 10am
Y

E 12pm
A
S 2:00pm
Y

A 3:30pm

E 4pm
A
S None till bed

E 7pm
A none (windown)
S 7:15

She can only handle the long A time in the afternoon, not in the morn, and this works for for her. It is still EASY, but adapted to suit.

HTH a little

Can you post your routine?  :)

When they are able to stay awake 3 hours then it's time to move to two naps but that doesn't usually happen until 7-10 months or so.  Until then, you may need to just increase A time and shorten naps until she's able to transition fully in a few months.

My lo is 16 months old and has never gone more than 4 hours between feeds.  Now she eats 3 big meals and 2 small snacks.  She could never go longer than that.

How many oz is your lo getting vs. how much solids?  For the first 12 months formula or breast milk needs to be their main source of food. Solids are just for fun. for now.  My lo did take in less formula with solids (nothing drastic) but she was never a big drinker or eater to begin with.  She never got the required amount of formula but I wasn't too worried as she was sleeping through just fine and was gaining the right amount of weight.  I am sure you lo is fine...just make sure she is getting enough milk in through out the day.

Amelia (on a good day) follows a perfect 4 hr EASY right now.

6.00  awake 6oz
7.30  2-3 Tbsp solids (mainly veggies, some fruit, varies from day to day)
8.00  Nap
10.00 Awake 6oz
11.30 3 Tbsp solids (see above) (This can sometimes happen at 3.30 instead)
12.00 Nap
2.00  Awake 6 oz
3.30  See above
4.00  Nap
5.30  I wake her (usually) 3+Tbsp solids (see above)
6.30-7.00 Asleep

I'm simply looking for some guidelines to follow, not a strict schedule.  The reason her days look so regimented is simply because she is such an Angel baby (at least I assume that's the reason).

I'm also just trying to look ahead, to educate myself on what's next.  I would read pregnancy books long before I got pregnant, then I read baby books, focusing on 0-3 months, then 3-6.  Now we've hit the big 6 month mark and I'm looking to see what's ahead.  (All the while avidly enjoying the now!)

Thank you so much for trying to help me out!

Oh, you are so blessed to have such an angel baby.  :)  It's great that you know exactly what she needs.

I was/am the same way and love to know what to expect long before it happens so I can prepair.  Of course when it comes there is still always something that surprises me...I guess it keeps things interesting  ;) ;D

Each lo is different in what happens next.  Timings are different...some stay up longer sooner, others later.  Also, the feeding routines adjusts based on when they take their naps, etc.  Next your lo will move to 2 naps....in a few months and from their you adjust the feedings accordingly.  Some babies take two 1.5 hour naps, others only need a 30 minute morning nap and then take a longer 2nd nap, etc.  This is where things can get a bit different.
