HELP! Teething causing early wakings?
« on: August 07, 2007, 14:55:09 pm »
My 10mo old(tomorrow) has been night waking and waking up early in the morning for almost 2weeks now.  He is getting his molars, I think, but there is no sign of the teeth breaking the surface.  Just the pain, occasional fever, chewing/biting on EVERYTHING!  When he wakes at night, he is fairly easy to get back to sleep...he just needs a little soothing.  In the morning we can't seem to get him to go back to sleep.  He usually wakes at 7:30, but has been waking anytime between 5 and 6:30.  If we are able to get him back to sleep, it is usually for no more than 5 or 10 min.
I am afraid it is becoming a habit.  We have tried wake to sleep if he wakes at the same time 2 days in a row, with no luck.  We have also tried giving him Tylenol and teething gel.  He refuses both, and will cry until we get him up.
Any ideas????
Thanks, Meagan

Sorry...I guess that would be helpful!
Our routine:
5-7 Wake up(try to get him back to sleep. might fall back asleep for a few min., but usually will start crying until DH gets him out of crib.)
7:00 Out of crib(Quietly play w/DH)
7:30 BF
8:15 Breakfast
9:20 Wind down/sleep routine
9:45 - 11/11:30 Sleep
11:30 BF
1:00 lunch
1:30 or 2 Wind down
2:30ish - 4 Sleep
4:00 BF
5:45 Dinner
6:15 Bath
6:45 BF
7:00 In crib
7-8 Asleep

He has a hard time falling asleep for pm nap and bedtime.  This is why the time varies.

Thanks,Meagan

Could he be overtired?

When lo's are overtired they usually have a hard time going to sleep and staying asleep.

When did he move to two naps?
On average how much day time sleep does he get/night time sleep?

When he wakes at 5am do you wait until 9pm to put him down for his nap?

Yes, I think he is probably OT.  We have been putting him down earlier in hopes he catchs up on some sleep.

He moved from 3 naps to 2 naps around 7mo.

Avg daytime sleep - 2.5 to 3.5hrs

Avg nighttime sleep - 11/12hrs

When he wakes at 5, we try to get him to go back to sleep.  He'll be in and out of sleep and we will eventually give up and get him up by about 6:45 or so.  Then we do wait until 9/9:30 to put him down for am nap.  For the past 3 days he has woken right around 6:30.  An hour early.

Thanks for the links.  They are very helpful.

He may be in need of a routine tweak.  A lot of times they will wake early if they are getting too much day time sleep.  You may need to 1. Add a few more minutes of A time and 2.  lessen the naps just a tad bit to compensate.

If you think he is OT you will want to wait and make sure he catches up on sleep first before changing things.

What do you think?

I do think he is OT, so we'll wait a bit.  How much day time sleep should he be getting at 10mo?  And A time?

We just increased his A time a bit.  He is now at:

3.25, am nap, 3-4(depending on how long it takes him to fall asleep at pm nap), pm nap

Thanks, Meagan

If he is OT, I would bring it back to the 3 hour mark for a few days and see if that gets him back on track.  For the PM nap, if you know it will take him awhile to go due to begin OT then lay him down even earlier so that by the time he does fall asleep it will be right on time, iykwim.  Not too early though or he may not be tired enough to actually go to sleep.  I know, it's such a fine balance....crazy sometimes, huh?!
