Not sure what to do
« on: August 05, 2007, 18:43:20 pm »
Hi I've been having problems with Holden going to sleep. He doesn't want me to leave him. He is almost 19mo. old and I think it may be SA. We went out last weekend and had a sitter and she couldn't get him to sleep but my niece did. And ever since I've had to stay right by his side. Last night we went out after he was asleep and he woke up at 12am. I was close to home so it didn't take long to get here but it took me 3 hrs. to get him back to sleep. Holding his hand by the crib. Tried WI/WO but he screams and cries. Today took him 1hr. to get to sleep for his nap after wi/wo.  I had to stay right by him again. Should I just do gradual withdrawal if he is having a hard time with wi/wo? He was sleeping so good. We were suppose to go on vacation next week and now I am not sure if I should. It might make matters worse and we will all end up miserable. Holdens not really talking alot so he can't tell me anything. He did have orajel and ibruprofen before he finally fell asleep at nap time. He could be teething. He has a great routine everyday is the same basically.

wake at 7:30
diaper change and breakfast
10 snack
we usually go to the playgruond or a walk
12 lunch
12:30 nap till about 2:30
3 snack
5:30 dinner
6 bath
7:30 bed
he usually falls asleep about 8

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Lisa

Well usually you'd give it about 2 weeks to see how one method is working. He could be going through SA but you can still do wi/wo. Just depends on what you are more comfortable with :-\.

Some info on SA in toddlers - https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80822.0
Which method to chose - https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80750.0

Does he show other teething symptoms?

We went through SA at this age it is quiet common. We used gradual withdrawl to get her to go to sleep at night. Naps were ok she would whinge for less than a minute but bedtime was a different thing.

Well looks like we have caught a cold. Tonight he has woken up 2x and I have to sit by the crib. I read the info and I think maybe what we are doing now the gw is probably best. And he has a cold now too. We have to get past that before I do the wi/wo. Thanks for your help.

Illness makes SA much worse in our house.  If you start with GW now, it will get easier when your lo gets better. :-*

Well Holden is over his cold now so I am ready to sleep train again. He is still waking 2-3 times a night usually at 2 and 5 am. Sometimes earlier like 11. I still can't leave the room and have been so tired myself I am falling asleep on the floor. Yesterday he woke at 6:30 and only had an hr. nap. I think he maybe getting overtired. When ever I take my hand off him he starts to whimper. I think it still is some SA. Should I start just PD and try to gradually get to the door? This is so frustrating after having so much good sleep for so long. I guess I am a bit spoiled. Please help?? Thanks.

Lisa, you could start with the gradual approach & if a few weeks latr you see no improvements then you could move on to pd or wi/wo

I am afraid I am becoming a prop. Today he only had a 40 min. nap. He usually goes for at least a 1.5 hr-2 nap. And all the NW makes me think he maybe becoming overtired. Tonight he fell asleep while having his bottle. We still do a bedtime bottle. I wanted to start weaning him from that but it will have to wait till we get over all this mess now. I think I am going to try and do PD tonight if he wakes up. Not exactly sure yet. Not good to not have a plan but I am so confused and tired myself.
Thanks
Lisa

Lisa, I would pick a method & try to stick to it. If you have to stay there until he is calm then do so, but not until he is asleep.

It might take some weeks but just be consistent & it will pay off.

Let me know how tonight goes
