Fussy feeding in 12 week old...
« on: August 06, 2007, 11:58:04 am »
Hi...I hope someone can suggest something to put my mind at rest. My LO is 12 weeks and is gaining weight fine. (She has such chubby legs and wrists!). She is now about 13lb (not weighed recently) and has started being a fussy feeder. She will pull on and off the breast, taking a gulp and stopping, or opening her mouth to latch then when on breast cries and pulls away. Sometimes when she pulls off milk sprays from my breast everywhere! This happened again this morning and so I tried lying down instead (usually feed lying down at night and no problems). She took about 5 minutes feed. (She only ever takes 10 min to feed)

She has been dribbling so much, has slightly red cheeks (i think) and was calmed by calpol and a chew on her fingers this morning!

I don't know if she is having a growth spurt, teething, some pain when fed cradle hold or what....

I've always had a fast flow of milk and she seemed to be coping fine more recently, now this. Although I'm not too worried that she'll begin to lose weight, I am concerned that she's not getting enough milk. She usually wakes once or twice at night still (about 1-2am and 5-6am), does have a dreamfeed (around 10.30), and last week only seemed to wake once at night, about 3-3.30 AND had really long 25min feeds at 6.45 (last feed before bed and at DF). We seem to have gone backwards and have this new problem.....

I feel like I'm always worrying about something!! Any advice....see anything I can work on?

Thanks Alex...

also multitasking...she's just taken a 10 min feed cradle hold...I'm sure she did it to confuse me! Still, pleased she's had a proper feed!

Still REALLY struggling with this. Her feeds are getting shorter and she screams after a few minutes. I think it's reflux, but getting Gaviscon into her is so difficult as she won't take any liquid!! Any suggestions...??

She feeds fine at night....I don't understand and am trying to do this alone and quietly as DH is on nights and currently asleep upstairs.  :'(

I can't help much except to tell you my LO did the same thing and in talking to others, there are many who have gone through that at 3 months... my LO is now 15 weeks and hasn't down it now for about 1-2 weeks - so it does pass...but I know I got a bit stressed out with it too wondering what was going wrong.  It often happened when we were visiting others too and I got a lot of strange looks and worried faces - lots of "what's wrong??"  :)  I always said "you got me!"  Hang in there.  Sometimes it meant I would just cut the feed short and try again later or wait till the next feed - she managed just fine.

Hi cassila

I had the exact same thing (incl the milk spraying all over DS - sometimes it would spray in DS nose :)) when DS was about 12 weeks.  Basically I stopped the feed and let him settle down once he stops squirming then i will try to feed again.  At one stage I couldn't even talk while feeding so I always had to find a quiet place to feed.

I'm not to sure about the feeds but I'm still giving DS EBM at about 4am he takes about 140mls (5oz).  I think as they grow they tend to take shorter feeds at the breast as they become more efficient eaters.

hope it helps a little

Thanks so much. It feels better knowing that it's something you have gone through and that it passes.  I'll just keep trying to feed her when I can....appreciate your replies!!

She's asleep now so I'll get some lunch while I can!!!!

xx

Hi,

Just to add that we too had the same issue at 12wks!!!  We were on a 3 hour EASY but just tried bumping it up by 10 mins over a few days then by 14wks we got to 3.5 hr EASY and the fussiness reduced dramatically (never completely gone, started to become very easily distracted by 4 months).

Guess we just figured she wasn't quite hungry enough, so spacing the feeds abit helped.

Good Luck
x

It's very common at this age - for all the reasons you mentioned!  You said that feeding lying down helps - I'd try doing that more during the day if you can - it's great for overactive letdown.  I know with my lo (I had strong letdown and she also has reflux), we did side lying feeds for months and months! Good luck and {{hugs}}.

Lydia - I wondred about that too....it does seem that 3.5 -4h feeds are easier as she is hungry enough to feed and get past the reflux/wind/whatever.......so thanks for your post...i'll try that too.

Erin...thanks for your support...i'll carry on with the side lying feeding then!

ps Bongela no sugar has been a godsend today. We put it on her gums and on her dummy...10 mins later she was feeding no problem! Maybe this has been part of the problem after all.....

We're going thru the same thing here at 3 months with DD.  and i vaguely recall it with DS when he was about 3 months.  I keep trying to force her back on to the breast and she just squawks and fusses, so I just gave up and try again at the next feed.  She's always eaten quickly (10 minutes) and now it's just a few minutes.  I noticed this afternoon, I hadn't fed her for 4 hours, and she was better, ate a bit longer, but still came off earlier than I'd like.  I was wondering if the fact that my toddler coming in the room had anything to do with it-creating distractions for her to focus on feeding.  I'm going to try to feed her tomorrow in a quiet place during the day.  We;ll see how it goes, with DS running around!
