when should I aim for next feed?
« on: August 22, 2007, 12:12:48 pm »
I have another question about feeds - she bottle feeds.

If she normally feeds every 2-3 hours or so, how do I know when the next feed is when she does this? 2-3 hours from the 5:40am feed, the 6:40am feed or the 7:50am feed?

This happens fairly frequently either during the day or night.

5:40am - Could only get her to drink 2 oz - which isn't bad. She normally drinks between 2&3
6:40am - Insisted on another .75 oz
7:50am - Insisted on .5 oz. Who knows when she'll insist for more. I tried paci, but no luck. She gets madder. I also try to check for gas.

prior to 5:40am - she had 3oz at 2:40am and prior to that 2.75oz at 11:40pm
She's a week old. I try to get her to take more, but she doesn't and keeps falling asleep and just won't accept anymore at the time. Other times she does
her full 3oz and actually still wants to snack on a .5 oz every 1/2 hour.

Have you tried to wake your lo during the day when she falls asleep during a feed?  It is very normal for a lo to fall asleep on a feed - we used to wake our DS up with a nappy change and then try and and get him to finish the rest of his feed.

Does your lo go longer than 3 hours during the day?  If yes, I would suggest not letting your lo go longer than 3 hours during the day to ensure that she takes more calories during the day and not at night.

Do you cluster feed in the evening and offer a DF?

Sorry for all the questions.

I do try to wake her or keep her awake. Sometimes she is awake and just refuses the rest of the feed. I work hard at trying to get her to burp too. A lot of times - even if she does burp....within the hour after feeding she'll get a little gassy.

She has gone longer than 3 hours, but I try to get her to eat if it hits the 3 hour mark during the day.
I haven't really gotten into cluster feedings or dream feed yet. I was told Easy isn't "easy" when babies are as young as Chaunda. She's a tad bit over a week old. Although she has cluster fed all on her own.

Another similiar situation is what just happened. She had 2oz at 12:15. 3oz is better, but could only get her to drink 2oz. Than she went until 3:15pm and drank 2 oz. I worked on burping her and trying to give more, but she wouldn't take it. Of course that all took a good 1/2 hour to 40 minutes. She was a tad bit gassy, got a burp out of her and than at 4:04PM - she insisted on drinking the last oz. So it was like this:

12:15 - 2 oz
3:15 - 2  oz
4:05PM - 1 oz

Do you give her any gas drops?  This may help with the gassiness.

I haven't tried gas drops just yet. Trying to feel her out before I make any decisions.
