10 month old with lots of teething (!!) - Early waking
« on: August 23, 2007, 11:58:12 am »
Hello!

Thank you in advance for reading this and hope you can help me.

Our daughter has been waking early off and on for some time, guessed it has been teeth / hunger.  :-\
My husband has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and we live in a terraced house so noise travels to us and the neighbours. My Husband needs his sleep as he has MS and works, i need some sleep too but I feel VERY concerned for him and don't want him to get ill.

I hope I've put enough info for you to help me. Please say if I've not. this is my first time on here so I'm a bit unsure what to do! Sorry!

How old is your child? - we have a 10month old daughter
What’s his/her daily routine? see below
What’s nap routine?
This isn't set in stone as we go out to some classes which totally push these times out! or if we are out and about at weekends there is some flex in here.
4.30 /5/5.30 - waking and getting back off then repeatedly with longer gaps can be over an hour of googling into cries before she goes off or I go to her.
6am nappy change & breastfeed from both breasts (15mins)
6.15-7.15am Play and top n tail
7.15-8am breakfast
8-9am play
9-9.45/10am nap (45mins to 1 hr)
10.30am breastfeed from one breast (5mins max) and rice cake
11.30am lunch
1-2/2.45pm nap (1hr to 1hr 45mins)
2.30/3pm breastfeed from one breast (5mins max) and rice cake if needed
4.30pm Tea
6.15pm bath or masage
6.30pm Breastfeed from both breasts (15mins) and top up of breastmilk in bottle (expressed from previous night)
7pm in cot and asleep
How long are naps? See above
What's bedtime routine? Time? see above
Do you bottle or breastfed?? see above
How much? or how long? see above
If breastfed.. one side or both?? (at each feed) see above

How many wakes per night? - She is generally waking at between 4 and 5 then going back off then waking and drifting off several times in the next hour till she's awake for over 1/2hr and getting up set. I used to feed her at 4/5 am ish wake then she'd go back to sleep until 7 or 8am which to be honest was better for our sanity and I'd get back to sleep as well as hubby! She then slept through a few times so we thought she didn't need the feed and tried to 'fix' it as it were. She is hungry at that time and the waking time is not regular. She will intersperce these wakings with sleeping a full 11-12hrs so is it more teeth - See below?

What’s your LO like when waking at night? How long is he/she up? See above
When you go to him/her is she fussing or crying? Or is it a mantra cry? I'll go once she is crying and she does a cough cry - get in here now cry!
What have you tried to settle?? Not recently to be honest cos when we've done it in past it has been hell, she is hungry sees me and wants milk. If DH goes she tries to get off but can't quite manage it.
What do you do for A time and how long is it? Activity time is taken up with 'crawling' playing with toys, reading books with her, practice walking while holding my hands, playgym, fidning hidden items, baby yoga, swimming, going for walk in pushchair, going ut on errands - shops etc, larking around etc etc.
Are there developmental issues such as teething or milestones? YES! We've cut 8 teeth in 12weeks and she is chewing and dribbling again so sommat else is possibly on the way! help!
Have you introduced cereal? Why, how much, and how many times a day? (for LO’s under 6 months) She appears to be cow's dairy intolerant (red marks around mouth when consumed anything cow's milk orientated), introduced sheep's and goats milk products which have been fine thus far.
Do they have a prop? If so what is it? I sing twinkle twinkle to her to get her in mood for sleep.
Do they have a lovie? Confused by your term here - do you mean a cuddly toy (I'm from UK!)? She has three toys in her cot a small cow, a Steiner toy cat (very small cat head on a soft pole/stick that squeaks if you wiggle the soft 'stiick') and a cuskie.

Many thanks for your time.

Charlie,
I imagine that your early morning wakes are because she is overtired.  Babies her age should be getting three hours of daytime sleep.  Night sleep and day sleep are very much linked.
Have you tried to extend her naps at all?  If so, what have you done?
I think that you might want to try putting her to bed a little earlier as well.  If she is up and starting her day at 6 she should be in bed by 6.

The morning hours consist of sleep that is generally lighter than the rest of the night. Because of this if a baby, or adult really, is overtired they are more apt to wake during those times and have difficulty getting back to sleep.
The teething and developmental things may be complicating the night waking as well.  For teething you can give pain meds or wait it out, developmental things pass as soon as the child has mastered the new trick.  So the key there is to give them tons of time to practice during the day.
A lovey is either a blanket or cuddly toy, yes.

Hope this helps a bit

Hello Myla,

Thanks so much for your reply.

Mmmm that makes some sense! The early hours seem to be when the teeth pain hits in plus she is pulling herself to kneeling in her cot too - must try to practice at EVERY given opportunity  ;) :) LOL!

We'll try to get those naps a bit longer then.

What is the total amount of sleep a baby of 44wks / 10 1/2 months needs is it 13 to 14 hours? If she sleeps 12 at night would 3hrs day naps be too much?

Thanks again.

Charlie

At 10.5 months the average sleep is about 15 hours 12 at night and 3 during the day.  Obviously some need a bit more or less.
Keep me posted.
