Starting EASY - breasts very full and leaking, is that normal?
« on: September 16, 2007, 01:23:17 am »
So we started EASY today, and it feels like DS is eating a lot less.  I wasn't concerned at how frequently he ate before (usually a good meal upon waking, and then a snack 1-2 hours later, and another before his next sleep), but with EASY, we're basically dropping at least one of those "snacks".  My main concerns are that he won't be eating enough upon waking, or that by the time he realizes he has to eat more at each feeding because there won't be snacks in between, my milk supply will have gone down.  Should I be worried about this, or will it all work out?

Also, today my breasts were very full in between feedings, because he didn't have those little snacks.  I guess that will go away as well once we settle into the routine?

TIA!

Yes, this will go away once you and your baby gets used to the new routine.

Hi there--

I went through something similar when we first started EASY.  In my case, on the advice of some of the mods here, I actually ended up adding back in one extra feed b/c my LO was really asking for it.   I guess, personally, I'd try to make adjustments gradually (if you've been feeding 8 times a day, don't drop to 4 over night . . . that sort of thing) and watch your LO.  Babywhisperer is ultimately about watching your LO's cues and you should always feed a hungry baby.  Dropping some feeds for us was no big deal because I think DS wasn't taking very much at that in the first place.

The feed we kept that was not by-the-book, was a feed in the morning a bit before his first nap.   He would wake and feed and then want to feed again about 30 minutes before his nap time.  It was too soon in theory, but he was genuinely hungry and seemed to take a full feed, so I didn't push him to drop that one.   I just made sure to have a little activity (diaper change, picture books, something) between that feed and his nap so that there was no feed-to-sleep association.

I completely agree with this approach. Every baby and mother are different and milk supply works differently. Sometimes change needs to made gradually.
As long as you are not ignoring hungry cues things should adjust but it may be better for your supply to make changes in steps.

Ha ha - I guess I shouldn't have worried, DS made up for the "missed" feedings - at 3:30am  :o  Since he's essentially been sleeping through the night for a couple of months, that was a shock to the system!!!  Oh well, I'm sure we'll get things ironed out - we spent yesterday mainly trying to respond to his cues, not necessarily following a specific schedule, and so by nightime things were a bit all over the place.  I'm trying to take things one step at a time - first get him into a better routine, then tackle the fact he sleeps in his swing and finally that he can't fall asleep on his own.  We'll see how today goes :)
