Update: the first two naps I swaddle him for, and this morning i think he got overheated so he woke up after 45 min and would not go back down. Nap #2 was much better, and he slept for 1.5 hours.  Nap #3 was even better and he slept for another 1.5 hours with one arm out of his swaddle!  But then we get into a sticky wicket for the end of our day.  Since he wakes at 5pm, feeds at 5:15/5:30 and then is up until 7:30 I think he's etting overtired???  he falls asleep at the breast for the last meal of the day and then wakes up after only 40 minutes... Do I need to put him into bed earlier??  Yesterday he catnapped though in the 6-7 hour and was okay--but should I depend on that?

Believe it or not  I just went cold turkey.  I had tried the gradual approach and had the same problem as you.  I started with naps and he actually went down just fine (only slept for 45 minutes, but that was to be expected since that is what he was doing before).  That night, it took about 45 minutes of shh/pat to soothe him and he's been swaddle free ever since!  He actually slept really well that first night, not waking himself up by getting out of the swaddle :)
