is this normal?-- 3 month old

Hello Hello,

I have a sleep question again!! My dd is 13 weeks old. She initially had a really hard time getting to sleep and needed shh/pat and swaddle. Within a few weeks we were able to wean from shh/pat and she was more often falling asleep and staying asleep without a problem on her own (we could put her down awake). She began getting out of the swaddle and trying to find her fingers a few weeks ago, so we decided to wean from the arms being in the swaddle. I thought this was going to be a horrible transition, but within a day, she was back to falling asleep on her own and staying asleep for first 2 naps (3rd nap has always been hit of miss). Within the last few days, however, she has had some difficulty staying asleep or taking a long time to fall asleep. She often wakes up after her first sleep cycle and is not able to get herself back to sleep. Now, she is often quiet, maybe sucking on her fingers, talking to herself or fussing a bit, but nothing that says come in and help me!!!! So, we have been leaving her if she is quiet and she is supposed to be sleeping as long as she is not fussing too much.

Is this a normal blip in the road to developing day sleep? Should we leave her as long as she is quiet? Or should we be helping her more.

As far as our routine: she typically wakes at 7. she eats every 3-4 hours and is awake 1-1 1.15 hours before going back down. This is not exact, we watch for sleep cues, but I can tell you that almost always by the time we winddown and lay her in her crib, she is yawning. We try to keep the activity pretty low key because she is a touchy baby and gets overstimulated easily. She is in bed between  and 7 depending on how her naps have gone that day and once she is asleep for the night, she is good for 8-10 hours before wanting to eat and then goes back to sleep. Any insight would be helpful. DH are having some difficulty figuring this lo out at times. dd1 was an angel baby and very easy to sleep train.

Wow!
I have no answers for you but everything you wrote sounds EXACTLY like my son, he will be 13 weeks on Sunday!

Toby has always struggled to go back to sleep after his first sleep cycle and being a touchy baby hates me in the room, so I leave him...he sucks his fingers, dozes, occasionally cries out (but not properly, just the odd mantra cry) so I let him stay in his cot. His first sleep I leave him in for 21/4 hours, and this is his best sleep of the day...sometimes he will sleep the whole time. Second and third sleeps he is in for 11/2 hours (2 sleep cycles) but very rarely will spend all that time asleep, certainly not in the third sleep where he will do only 45 mins then doze.

So I also want to know the answers to your questions! Have you tried wake to sleep? It doesn't work for toby, he still wakes, either at 30mins or 1hr...

We also have just taken Toby's arms out of his wrap as that often woke him, and he's getting used to that!

We haven't tried wake to sleep yet. We are going to try increasing the A times slightly to see if that helps (even though she is always yawning by the time we lay her in her crib). We'll see what happens.
