DS was a 45 min napper from 2 mons to about 6-7 mons.  Nothing worked to fix this, just worked itself out in the end.
Since Dec/Jan he's been on 2 naps, 30 min in the am and 1.5-2 hr in the pm - worked like a charm, same times every day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm so sad it's gone!
Lately he's been having trouble going down for the night, even at 8:30 and has refused either am or pm nap, so I think it's time for the switch.
However, as I've tried one nap days over the last 2 wks, he's been doing 2 hrs very rarely, usually 1.5 or a little longer.  Once 2h 40m which was incredible, but affected his night sleep.
So I'm wondering if there is a tie to same issues as early 45 min naps?
Has anyone found this and survived, eventually getting back on a "normal" or "regular" routine?

Our schedule was;
Wake 8am
Nap 1 11-11:30
Nap 2 2:30-4/4:30
Bed 8/8:30

A times were basically 3 hrs - 4.5 hrs.

I've been trying...
Wake 8am
Nap 12:30-???
Bed 7:30-8 depending on nap

However it seems the jump to 4-5 hr morning A time is too much????
Argh... I really, really liked the dependable schedule!

Any thoughts would be gladly accepted.
TIA!
Steph

OH yes!!! Or should I say for you, OH no!!  ::) :P  I always thought and wondered about that too as a fellow 45 min (40 min in our case)  ::) napper. DS was always a good night sleeper though so at least that was good.  We had early wakings with the 2-1 transition though due to overtired as like you he was only doing 1.5 hour nap where as before with 2 naps he was doing a total of 2 -2 1/2. We started the transion at 15 months BTW.  I tweaked and I tweaked, in the end I think some of these things did work, but really I feel time is what solved it!  :P ::) (It also didn't help having Sep Anx and teething thrown in there as well during this transition! >:( )

What we did:

I did do W2S, it worked for us with the 40 min nap problem, so what the heck. I did it at 1hr and 5 mins (please don't make me explain how I came up with this time :P ) it worked a few times but not always.

I made sure he had a good lunch.

I put him to nap at 5hours from waking or 4.5 on really overtired days.

We put him to bed at night early (no longer than 4.5 hours wake time from nap) as he was not tacking the lost sleep in the day onto his night and waking early, so I felt he at least could get the extra time at the beginning of the sleep. KWIM?

On a horrible overtired cycle, I would give him a very short 10-15 min cat nap in the car or buggy in the a.m to tie him over to the real nap.

Like I said, after around 2 almost 3  :'(months it seem to just click....it was awful for us and I said to DH it was harder than the newborn phase for us and he agreed, we were beat and felt beaten at the time adn wanted our happy DS back!

(((((((((((HUGS))))))))) to you!

Aisling x
PS.  I just re-read my post and I sound awfully dramatic, sorry!  :-[ :D)

Thanks a million for your response!  I will try W2S next week.  It is good to hear it took a while, but ended well.  Do you mind me asking what his schedule is like now??  Thanks again!

No probs Steph,

7-7:30 am wake up

Have kept the 5 hours until nap.  He is very active in the a.m and also he is still not one to go long in the a.m. He is ready for his nap and rarely fights it. He sleeps on average around 1 hr and 40 min lately, he may do a 2 hour only 1x a week now.

We do 6 hours to bed, I put him in around half hour to 20 min before this time, he falls asleep pretty fast actually.  So usually in his bed around 7:30 asleep before 8.
He sleeps 11hrs on average.  He has always been an average total sleep guy or just under the average.  He's not a sleepy guy, very alert since birth!

HTH

A x

Just thought I'd give you a quick update.... so I never tried w2s b/c I couldn't decide when to do it b/c his wake/sleep lengths were so inconsistent, so I alternated 1 nap, then 2 nap, every other day and after about 1.5 wks of that he just started being able to sleep in to make up the extra sleep he missed, if he took a bad nap and from there he started napping better - it's an avg of 1h40 to 2 hrs, sounds similiar to your little guy.  We're doing an 8-8 schedule with a 1-3 nap.  Thanks for your help, I was so relieved the transition went faster than I was bracing for!!!!
