Am I feeding too much solid food???
« on: September 30, 2007, 09:06:47 am »
Hi, my LO has decided to refuse the bottle a couple of times, im worried he isnt getting enough to drink ...  We started BLW about 3 weeks ago and he loves to feed himself which is wonderful to watch. is 6&half months young.

Our day 'generally' goes like this:

6am - up bottle - 200ml
7am - rice cracker with avocado (eats prob quarter of this) & half to 3/4 mashed bananas
8am - nap

10am - bottle - 120 ml
11.30 - lunch: potato cake (1/3 palm size), would chew on 1/4 of a pear (prob eats at least half of this)
12.30 - nap

2pm - bottle - refused yesterday.  managed to take 50ml, today took 100 ml after about 15 mins trying.
- havnt been feeding any solids here cause worried hes not going to drink any more later
4.30pm - nap

5.30 - bottle - 170ml (gets hungry before bathtime)
6pm - bath
6.30 asleep, offer more bottle, prob take 25ml ...

Also, I stopped breast feeding about 3 days ago so I am sure he is missing the closeness with me.  I was doing 50/50 for about 2 weeks and took about 4 weeks to change from breast to bottle.

I just dont know how much solids i should be offering!  esp as he doesnt seem to refuse any, as he seems to like being involved at dinner times.

It has been hot here the last week as well and he is drinking water really good.

advice would be greatly received !!
Vanessa :)

It's difficult to overfeed a baby using a self-feeding approach, however ds might be having too much water - could you describe when he has it and how much?

I tend only to offer water with solid food meals, just to wet the pallet really rather than as a drink, so that it doesn't interfere with the amount of milk she takes in.

Just a thought as your routine seems fine really,

Ax

Hi Alison,

I offer water with the solid food.  I read on the site that babies arent as hydrated on formula as they are when breastfed - and as the temps are now 28 degrees here in Aus I thought I should offer a bit more if we are heading out for a walk during the day.   I also found on another post that about 600ml is good for a baby 6mths + ???  if so then I guess we are doing ok??

I was thinking that maybe I should offer food a bit closer to bottle time - say 45 mins after??  (my days seem to revolve around food at the moment, me on a gluten free diet and food for Emilio and also lunches for dad :) at least I get to eat what Emilio eats, steamed vegies etc which is always good)

You cant help but worry about these things - esp when little cousin is a 'wee chunker' and Emilio is looking 'normal' for a baby, average size.  As always if he is happy then he is happy! and always putting on weight.

He is able to sleep through the night now, well 50% of the time he needs a night time visit then he is ok - not hungry.
aahhh the joys of parenting, and this is only the start  ;)

thanks, Vanessa
