Need help with 11 month old
« on: October 14, 2007, 17:48:00 pm »
Hi, I need some guidance with my 11 month old please!

For the last 2 weeks, she has been waking up crying really hard from some of her naps, and also having shorter naps - anywhere from 35 minutes to 1:05.  (I'm not really complaining about a nap of 1:05, but I just wanted to show the inconsistency.)  Prior to this all naps were 1:15-1:30 on her own, except that I wake her up from her morning nap at 1:15 if she doesn't wake herself.  A few of the times she woke crying, I found her standing up in her crib.  But she hasn't done that for over a week.

Here is her old schedule that has worked for the last 5 weeks: and yes, I know it's strange to have such a long A time in the morning, but that seemed to be the only thing that worked for her...

6:45 awake
10:35 asleep (woke her at 1:15)
11:50 awake
3:15 asleep
4:45 awake
7:30 asleep

Now it's either the same as above or more like this: (depending on the day)

6:45 awake
10:40 asleep (for 1:05, woke on own happy)
11:45 awake
3:15 asleep (for :45)
4:00 awake and crying hard
7:00 asleep

Does she need more A time again?  Is it possible that she needs less A time - can lo's revert backwards as they become more mobile and exhaust themselves more?  I know she's crying hard because she's not rested...please, any suggestions appreciated!

Sorry can i ask is she waking up from both naps crying or just the PM nap?
It is possible that the extra mobility is making more tired (and more hungry) and also teething (think MOLARS at this age) could be factored in as well.
DD at that age was doing 3,5hrs awake time.
Is her PM nap always short as well now?

Well, like I said, it's very inconsistent, (the routine example I posted isn't how it always goes)...but in the last 2 weeks, she's woken up early from her a.m. nap 4 times, and her p.m. nap 6 times crying hard (when her naps are between 35-50 minutes).  She doesn't cry when they are around an hour.  Sometimes she'll cry for 5 minutes and go back to sleep, but that is rare.

Teething is always a possibility, but I feel like she slept pretty consistently even when she had 4 teeth coming in at once (prior to this new situation).  She has seven now, so maybe the 8th is coming soon (since her's usually stagger as a set).  I don't think hunger has ever been an issue, since she doesn't fuss before her usual meal times even when she wakes early.

Her night sleep is always good, no night wakings at all.  Her total sleep was usually around 13:15-13:30.  I try to keep it close to that by putting her to bed early on the days she naps poorly.

Anyway, any ideas???

thank you!

Around 11 months is when Josie went thru some heavy-duty separation anxiety. She also ended up with a cold, a stomach bug (lotsa puking  :-X :P), and general icky stuff. Oh, and it's also when she went to just the one nap  :-\

You may want to rule out an ear infection or new molars coming in before panicking too much. If oyu give a bit of pain meds 20 minutes before naptime and it makes a differene you know pain may well be the problem. Then it's a matter of finding out if it's "just" molars/teeth or something more sinister like an ear infection, but then at least you have an idea whre to start, so that'd be my first thing to try.

Hope this gives you a starting place!

That is a good suggestion, and I've actually tried that a couple of times and some of the time she woke up early anyway, and other times she didn't, so it may have just been a coincidence and a continuation of her inconsistency.  I'll definately keep an eye on it though!  Thanks!

Hi again,

I'm bumping this to the top, hoping for some help, and giving a quick update...

The last 2 days have gone like this:

6:50 awake
10:20 sleep (trying less A time since she is moving about like crazy)
11:35 woke her (only because I want to keep the p.m. nap protected
3:00 sleep
3:55 wakes up crying really hard instantaneously!
7:15-7:45 bed

ANY IDEAS how to help her not wake crying so hard?

thanks, katemom

If she IS teething, not much you can do but wait it out. :(

One thing I learned about babies (and kids) is that the only thing consistent about them is often inconsistency! They sure so keep us guessing, that's for sure!
