7 week old waking at 5am
« on: November 07, 2007, 10:57:41 am »
Hi all, my DS is 7 weeks on Sunday and we have been having some daytime sleeping issues from word go, however these have been due to acid reflux which we now have medicated and he is generally much happier. Ever since he was born he has been having a last feed at 10.30pm (DF) and wakes between 2 - 3am for a feed, however he has suddenly started to wake at 4am/5am for a feed whereas before he would go to 6am, we have real trouble getting him to go back to sleep after the 4/5am feed so are up on and off from 4 am and is really a killer!!

I know that the BW recommends starting your day at 7am, but how do I get him to go that long? this morning he fed at 5am but didn't take a full feed at 7am.

I cluster feed in the evening and DF at the 10.30pm but he wont take much of his feed at this time, sometimes at his 2/3am feed he will take only a few oz other times he will take 4/5.

Any ideas??  ???

Hugs, sorry to hear you are going through such a rough time.

Are you treating te 4/5am feed as a night time feed - sticking to a dark room with no talking etc?

How often are you feeding during the day? Are you bottle or breastfeeding?

I am bottle feeding and he goes three hours in the day up until around 3pm when I feed him 2 hourly but try to stretch to 2.5 hours so I can get the last feed in at 10ish, routine for feeding goes roughly as follows on a good day!:
2am, 6am, 9am, 12 mid, 3pm, 5.30pm, 8pm, 10.30pm

I try to treat 6am as night feed with him still swaddled and lights down etc but he remains wide awake and read to play!!

We find, that even if our DD wakes at around 7am, if we treat it as a night waking, she usually will go straight back to sleep, she does grunt and moan for a while, but if we keep the lights etc off, she usually drifts off quite quickly.

I've tried that as he is capable of getting himself off to sleep, but he only seems to be able to do this if he is really tired

NessieD even though Tracy's 3h EASY suggests starting at 7am, I think it was just meant as a guideline as that suits most people's routine.  You must however adjust it to suit your routine.  It is important though to keep the 3h EASY.  Our routine was always from 6-6 because that suited our  household routine better.  Here is what you should aim for:
(remember to adjust to your needs)

7am wake and feed
8.30am nap ( 1 1/2h)
10.00am eat
11.30am nap (1 1/2h)
1.00pm eat
2.30pm (1 1/2h nap)
4pm feed
5 or 6pm  40min catnap to get baby through feed and bath
7pm (clusterfeed)
7.30pm bedtime
10 or 11pm dreamfeed

If he wakes at 4 I agree with pp's that you should treat it as night , feed him and put him back to sleep.  He may just be going through a growth spurt again

HTH
