suddenly scared at bed time
« on: October 20, 2007, 13:40:03 pm »
My 18 month old has suddenly started behaving scared at bed time, all is calm for the first part of the bedtime routine, she has her milk, story, lullaby, we put her in her sleeping bag, everything goes well until we put her in her cot, then she stands up instantly and cries, we cuddle and put her back down with reassuring words etc....... but it doesnt seem to help and last night it took an hour for her to get tired enough to give up, we gave her pain relief last night just incase she was teething, shes not afraid of her cot as she is fine at her afternoon nap, and we have an adequate night light which gives her room a nice glow, she has her fave toy that she loves,  I am out of ideas as to what it is, does anyone else have any ideas?

Hi,

My LO is 13 months so i have to yet to see what i should expect when she is 18 months.
Could it be possible that your LO is not afraid of her cot considering her naps are fine? Maybe she is not tired?
Now when you say you go in for a cuddle, it's a short one right? Does you LO stand up often and do you walk in to cuddle every time she does? I usually get all my cuddling in right before my LO goes to bed after that when i go in to sooth her for a moment and lay her back down because she is standing in her crib, i don't cuddle because i don't necessary want to give her the impression. Make sense?  :-\

hi there
what you are describing sounds just like a developmental phase many of us here went through around that age. It started suddenly and I too had no idea why at first. It seems that they can go through a bit of SA at this age, which only affects their sleep- we had no trouble with SA during the day. I got through it with some gradual withdrawal, I would tell her as I put her jammies on that I would stay with her while she fell asleep, and that worked so well, she was really calm and fell asleep great. If I tried to leave before she was asleep she went mental. It took us about 3-4 weeks before things suddenly went back to normal.
Here's a couple threads that might help.
this one is a chat thread started a while back by some mums having the exact same problem:

This is my thread when we were having these problems:

hope this helps xxx
