Is his wake time too short??
« on: October 19, 2007, 19:38:41 pm »
My six week old baby went down this morning for a 2 hour nap.  I had to wake him to feed, and then he was fussy after 45 minutes of being awake.  (it sounds like with the EASY he should be awake for about an hour and a half) I put him down an hour after I woke him and he only slept for about an hour longer.  The next feeding shouldn't be for another hour (making it 3 hours after the last feeding).  Should I just feed him at 2 hours instead of three, or should I do a EASAE or should I try to get him to sleep for another hour???

I haven't read the BW book yet, I'm checking it out at the library today... so maybe it'll answer the question, but I'm just wondering what advise you all have about this.

Hi, if he was fussy at 45Min's then thats when he should go down.  1.5hrs is the max A time he will likely be on before dropping a feed and moving onto 4hr EASY.  How long he can stay awake for will gradually stretch out as he gets older until by 3.5-4months he should be doing 1.5-2hrs A time.  Its most likely that he only slept for an hour because he was over tired from staying up for an hour before.  Try to read his sleep cues.  They are all slightly different, but I used to get DD to bed straight after first yawn but for some the first yawn is too late.  Some will get gerky movements as they get tired and limb control goes out the window.  Others will start to get a glazed look in their eyes.  Watch him closely after feed and nappy changes and you will soon be able to read when he is ready for sleep.

At his age try not to worry too much about what you should or shouldn't be doing.  Trust your own instincts.  If he wakes after just 1 hr asleep and you know he will need to be asleep again in 45Min's time, then feed him again, nappy change/play & back to sleep.  Once you get his A times sorted and can read his tired cues he will start to nap more consistently.  The thing with EASY is its a routine not a schedule.  It goes Eat Activity Sleep.  As long as thats what your doing and your following his cues to know when he needs to do these 3 basic things then his routine will be perfect, for him  :)

additionally, at 6 weeks, 30 - 45 minutes of A time is sometimes all they can handle.

Welcome to the boards and Tracy's methods!  Hope you enjoy it!!
