Short naps affecting schedule
« on: October 17, 2007, 22:29:50 pm »
LO is 5 months, we are trying to keep to 4-hour EASY. But about 50% of the time he takes 45-minute naps. PU/PD usually doesn't work once he's woken from the nap so we give up after about 15 min of PU/PD if he doesn't resettle.

Often this means that by the afternoon, we are in the situation where his next feed is falling exactly the time he should be going down for the next nap, if we give him about 2 hours A time after he woke up from the last nap.

What to do when his happens? Sometimes we try to extend the A time to 2.25-2.5 or sometimes 3 hours(!) and sometimes we feed a little earlier (0.5-1 hour earlier), but we're not sure what's the best solution.

I remember when my LO did this quite a bit (and still does sometimes.)  Getting her back to sleep never worked for me.  It was easiest to go ahead and get her up.  When this happened I just tried to focus on the routine more then hitting my ideal schedule times.  It sounds like you already are making small adjustments to do that. So, I don't really have an answer for you.. just wanted you to know that it happens.  Sorry if that isn't very helpful.  Others may have some tips that I'd love to hear too!

I would suggest actually cutting the A time a bit.  Three hours is certainly too long for his age. Does he show you good tired cues?  Don't be too concerned about the clock. I would watch for cues first.

I think sleep takes priority.  Extend the A time too much and you have a problem.  If you feed early, LO may 1.) not eat well, 2.) fall asleep while nursing (and then you have the trouble to getting them to the crib without waking and if you do, they may not go back to sleep.)

I kick myself everytime I choose feeding over napping.

Hi.  I agree with the other posters.  At 5mths the most my ds could manage was a 2hr A time.  Have you tried using shh/pat rather than pu/pd?  And I've found that partially following our nighttime routine helps (story in darkened room, sleeping in gro-bag) really helps.
