Lack of sleep cues

I'm not sure if I'm asking for advice or just venting ...

What do you do when baby doesn't give you any obvious sleep cues and it's getting beyond their A time?

Lately this has been happening to us. (LO is 5.5 mos.) When we get to about 2 hours of A time, we start the nap wind-down routine even w/out sleep cues, but this has resulted in struggles and PU/PD in the crib to the point when he is awake more than 3 hours total before he sleeps. Then takes a 45-min nap.  :-\

Debi-

My LO has been similar to yours very recently as well.  I have been looking (like a hawk I might add) for the more subtle cues such as motor skills getting a little sloppy and slight lull in activity.  Then I have been doing a longer wind down with sitting and reading.  It seems that when she has really fun stuff going on around her, she doesn't want to sleep, but the reading, she will eventually become tired.  If I don't see any of those more subtle cues, then I just "decide" when she should be tired and we go sit quietly for a while.  It seems that once her limbs are not so active and she is quietly sitting, she will be more inclined to be tired and go to sleep.  Our wind down for a nap went 30 minutes today.

The thing my lo does to show she's tired...very subtle...is to look away from toys or faces.  When she won't look me in the face or pay attention to her favorite toy, I know it's time for the wind-down.
