HELP with napa and early wakings!!!
« on: October 27, 2007, 22:08:16 pm »
hi evereyone, my lo turned one a couple of weeks ago, and for about the last 5 or 6 weeks now has been waking up on avergae about 5.30am, he use to sleep 6.30pm to 6.30am an then suddenly started waking early. I haave started monitoring his naps (he goes childcare in the week all week), most of the time he goes down 9.30am and sleeps for about an hour an half, sometimes only 45 mins, his next nap which seems to be a problem, he goes down at 2.30 and only sleeps 45 mins, i mainly pick him up at 5, and when i get home hes already tired, so ihave to rush around feedin him etc, so he doesnt get too overtired, and end up puttin him to bed as early as 6pm , no later than 6.30, its been takin him half an hour to settle and go to sleep.

I asked them to try him on one nap at childcare but that dint work, he only ended up sleepin 45 mins for the whole day, i cant really try and out him to bed later as i know he will be over tired then, and he will still wake at 5.30am.

Im guessin he could maybe do with a little extra, he always seems a little grumpy when he wakes, unless we keep him occupied, but thats hard when ur tryin to get ready for work.

I dunno what to try with him anymore, its doing my head in, i know a lot of you suggest the wake to sleep, but i dont fancy havin to get up at 4.30, esp of i have work, and if it doesnt work , ill end up with a very grumpy baby, so if possible other suggestions, and if i need to try that i will at a last resort

thanks tracy xxxxx

Hi Tracy & welcome

Sounds like the 2-1 transition.... you could try asking daycare to limit the morning nap to 45mins & offer the afternoon nap 3-3.5hrs later (so something like this):

9:30-10:15 - morning nap
1:30-3pm - afternoon nap
6.30-7pm - bedtime

Alot of babies fight the afternoon nap if the morning nap is as long as 1.5hrs or if they do end up falling asleep its late in the the afternoon & can push bedtime to a later hour. But if you aren't comfortable with cutting the morning nap then you could try pushing it out to 10am so that his day shifts to 30mins later...

10-11.30 - morning nap (1.5hrs)
2:45-3pm - afternoon nap (45mins)
7pm - bedtime

& ideally he should wake a little later in the day
