26 month old goes to sleep but wakes up!
« on: November 21, 2007, 22:15:48 pm »
hey all, just wondering if anyone can help.

My 26 month old son has always been a good sleeper barring a few times he has either been teething or had an illness. Up until a few months ago he always slept from 7.30/8pm to 7.30/8am.

When he first started to wake it could have been anywhere between midnight and five am. He has been in a bed from approximately 20 months. He sleeps in a sleeping/grow bag and pj's. His bedtime routine has always been watch his bedtime programme while eating toast and drinking juice, (never been a fan of milk and he has been off the bottle for a long time), go to bed with daddy or mummy and we read him a few books. Then he gets into bed and we play his musical star, it plays bedtime tunes for five minutes with a projection light. He always goes to sleep no hassle.

When he wakes he will come into our room, if after our bedtime. He will come to one side of our bed, and start to cry. If its before we have gone to bed, (mostly its later but tonight our neighbours where banging and that woke him), he will come to the top of our stairs, we have a safety gate on, he throws his dummy over and starts to cry.

We have tried everything we can think of, leaving him for a while, going up, leaving him longer, before going back up, going up straight away, and putting him back in. Talking to him, not talking to him, good cop bad cop the lot! We do lift him in to our bed if we are tired. He will sleep in it no problem. Also if we get into his bed, he will go to sleep no problem. Although either way he fidgets quite a bit, which is weird. We have tried to vary his routine, tried giving him different toys, cutting out the programme. Going back to milk before bedtime. He hasn't napped now for about three weeks, he would sleep he just got out of bed and I couldn't get him to nap.

We are really lost, we are so tired, every night is a broken nights sleep.

We are desperate, please help if you can, suggestions are welcome.

I remember sasha went through a period of this and its pretty common with toddlers ::).
I think a consistent way of dealing with it will help and sometimes it can take a couple of weeks until it starts working.
The first time he gets up,i'd take him back to his bed, tuck him in ,kiss and say its sleepy time.Next time just lead him back and say its sleep time. After that just take him back to bed and say nothing. This worked with sasha (although it took a while).
We also remained consistent with her bedtime routine, even now we still give her milk before her bath and let her decide if she wants it.but the routine stays the same.Bath, read story, cuddle, music on and night night.

I'd do the same for naps as well because if he is missing sleep during the day this could be causing overtired ness.if he completly refuses his nap then i'd bring his bedtime earlier to again compensate for any OT.
