switch from double sided to single sided feeding
« on: November 26, 2007, 20:00:00 pm »
For the past few days, DD, who is one month old, has gone from feeding on both side to just one side.  She used to take both side for about 20+ minutes each, with breast compressions.  Now she'll take one side for about 20 minutes and when I offer the second side, only feed for about 5 minutes or so.  Is this normal/okay?  Can I assume she's getting more efficient and 'milking' the first side more than before and getting all she needs?  She also went through a period of only eating for 10 minutes on each side, but then she went back to longer feeds.

Maybe before she would just feed because she wanted to suck, but now I'm noticing that she'll actually pull off the breast and push away when she's done, so maybe she's getting older and realizing she's full and stopping?

I'm just rambling on here. :)

It's fine! What you're looking for is that your dd can go 2.5 to 3 hours between feeds, she seems happy and contented, she's producing at least 6 wet nappies in 24 hours and that she's gaining weight. The length of time she spends at the breast means very little, particularly if she's meeting all the criteria above.

I liked single sided feeding - means that you have a reserve when you need it, though we switched to double sided at around 6 months. If you choose to go with the double sided make sure that your 1st breast really is empty - don't just go by the clock!
