When do I start to transition to 4 hr EASY?
« on: December 07, 2007, 21:45:48 pm »
My DS is 13 1/2 weeks and weighs 16lbs 12oz. He doesn't seem to be hungry at the 3hr mark but I usually feed him anyway (he takes it) just because I hate veering off from the routine. Does that mean it's time to extend his feeding to 4hrs or at least 3.5hrs? He usually wakes up once or twice at night at ~4am or 3 & 6am after a dreamfeed at 11pm although last night, he woke up at 1:40, 4:40 and 7:40am so I'm not exactly sure if he's ready for it.

It definitely might be time to transition to the 3.5 hour EASY.  Your DS may not be ready for the A time of a 4 hour EASY.

You're talking about a routine, not a schedule.  Meaning, the times are guidelines not rules.  If he's not hungry at 3 hrs, don't feed him.  He should be slowly transitioning to a 4 hr routine between 16-20 weeks.  (BF babies sometimes longer)

The night wakings might be a result of still hanging onto a 3hr schedule without letting him naturally extending his times between feeds.

And I agree with Tom Tom's mom.  It is probably too soon for a 4 hr Routine, although he may have a feed or two where he can go up to 4 hrs.

But what do I do if he's tired but not hungry? I mean, he'll wake up from his nap (which can sometimes be 2 hrs long or more) and then he's still not hungry. So, I do an A until he's hungry but by the time he gets hungry, it's already at least 1/2 hr after his nap which shortens his awake time to only 1 hr after feed and then he's tired again. So now, I put him to sleep and then he'll be up after 2 hrs (I wake him at this point because I don't want him to sleep too long in case it robs him of his nighttime sleep) and then he'll wake up not hungry again. The whole pattern repeats itself and the whole EASY routine gets screwed up. Am I making any sense? Please help as I am getting confused! Last night, he woke up 4 times (normally only once or twice) and I ended up feeding him although I was not sure if he was really hungry.

Why dont you try streatching both??  Try a 3.5 or a varation of.  I know it is hard when they nap at the wrong times but tweaking his schedule should help with the nw.  Good luck

You mean stretch both the A and the nap times longer than 2 hrs?He usually sleeps for 2hrs at the least on the first 2 naps and then the 3rd one, I couldn't get him to go longer than 30-45min. and then he gets fussy from then on because he's tired but can't or don't want to sleep.

When the A time is cut up with a feed in the middle of it, the A time naturally is able to get extended easier.  You know, the extra energy from the milk.  For our DD, her shortest A time is still the first one of the day, but the ones in the middle she can go much longer.
