1 nap transition results in 45 minute naps!
« on: January 06, 2008, 15:37:50 pm »
Hello all...

I posted a few weeks back, and a few months back.  We are still dealing with 1-45 minute nap.  I have tried all sorts of "A" times and nap times (10:30 - 1:00).  All of the different times result in 45 minute naps.  My daughter does sleep through the night, no NW, and usually sleeps 11-12 hours.  Some nights more, some nights, less (like 10 hours, depending on our schedule that day/night).  Regardless of the change, she still only takes 45 minute naps.  This leads me to think that we are either 1, stuck in this rut, or 2, this is all she is capable of doing.  When we took 2 naps, she took 2 45-60 minute naps, so I know she needs that amount still (90 minutes at least).  She is happy when she wakes up from her nap, but it creates a very long afternoon, and she gets cranky by 5ish-6.  She is 20 months old now (in 2 days) and I feel as though she is the oldest LO on this site going through this.  I don't know what to do anymore.  If I go in and try to pat her, she is UP UP UP.  I just reinforce the "nap's over" thought once I appear in her room.  If I leave her alone, she at least has rest time in her room for awhile (she can sit in there for a long time by herself...).

Any thoughts?  ideas?  help?  I am desperate....

Hmm
well if she normally sleeps 12 hours the most daytime sleep you would get would be an hour from her.
when you say you have tried different times have you tried sticking consistently to one time?
TBH when she wakes I'd leave her rather than intervene.if shes happy then at least shes getting a rest even though shes not actually sleeping.

What time is the nap now? What does her day look like?

I would also 2nd on sticking to 1 nap time & if she's taking 45min nap you might want to try w2s ... some babies are stuck on short naps once they are down to 1 nap. Jasmine did this for a while... to be honest in order to get a longer nap out of her, I had to cut her night short. I pushed her bedtime 15mins every 3-4days so that she wouldn't be sleeping 12+hrs at night & that worked a treat! Her nap increased to 1.5-2hrs & nights are 11hrs long.

Thanks everyone...
I have heard about cutting the night short and by accident, a few times we have tried this.  No luck.... Does it have to be maybe 3-4-5 nights consistent though?  I guess this is just the way it is... To be honest, I feel a little more freedom as she does not take these monster naps, so if I have things to do, I can do them and not worry "it's naptime".  I know regardless of the time, 10:00, 12:00 or 2:--, she will take a 45 minute nap, and wake up happy.  Did I mention I am pregnant and exhausted, though  ;D

Congrats :).

Depends on how much you want to protect the nap :-\ .For me DD still has a nap and because DH and I both work shifts it works for us.If its not a big deal then at elast you know she is hapy to saty in her room for quiet time and is getting a fairly decent amt of sleep.
