Does a toddler need a Firm or Soft mattress?
« on: January 09, 2008, 04:01:55 am »
So we just transitioned our 29 month old from a toddler bed to a Full size bed.
The mattress that we got is firm/plush.  Well to me it is so uncomfortable and it was a nice mattress and not cheap.  It is hard....  My DH said that toddler's need a firmer mattress.

I could have gotten a pillow top for $100.00 more, but did not think it would be that uncomfortable.  He seems to love it though.

Does anyone know what they recommend for a growing child?

Thanks, Wendy

A firm mattress. Apparantly it's better for their back. A soft mattress will curve their back wrong. They also need no pillow or maybe a very thin one if he appreciates a pillow.
My son's mattress is uncomfortable for me as well, but he is perfectly fine...

No pillows?  They are not supposed to sleep on a pillow?  We have 4 pillows in his bed, because he loves them, but he does always end up just sleeping on the bed without it.

I was thinking about getting a Memory Foam Mattress topper???

I heard firm as well.  I think as long as the pillows are thin it is  ok.

So are no pillows or a thin pillow due to proper sleep or is it due to less risk of suffocation?

Wendy I think it is to do with the curve of the neck/back! Tiahnee sleeps with a pillow though  :-\  :)

Whewww thank goodness because he loves having pillows on his bed, but he always ends up actually sleeping just on the mattress with no pillow though.

I think the Firm bed is what is comfy to him.  He slept in his bed all night and did not move once.  Normally the covers are every where and he tosses and turns when he is in my bed.

My son has a pillow too, since he likes the cozyness of it, but he always ends up on his mattress for sleeping. When they get older though, they don't move as much and then they will lay on their pillow longer and that's why it's recommended to not use a pillow or a thin one. It has to do with their neck/spine curve...
If he's happy with lots of pillows for comfort, they are more like stuffies to him and I wouldn't worry about it...
