33 Month old in our bed
« on: February 07, 2008, 18:35:20 pm »
My DS is 3 in April and was in our bed from about 12am until morning, i admit i gave up the baby whisperer techniques long ago and just to get some sleep aloud him into our bed (have to admit its the most sleep ive ever had) except now he says its his bed and comes into it sometimes as early as 10pm - when DP comes to bed he will often say 'no dadda this is my bed go away' and DP will go sleep in his bed.  I know this is bad and unhealthy for everyone now and want him to sleep all night in his own bed ahahahha!!  Not going to be easy i realise but now me and DP want to try for another (impossible with a little boy inbetween us all night) and DS is now coming into our bed earlier and earlier the time seems right.

Ok...so what do i do  ;D

Ive been told to put a baby gate over his door and take him back to bed everytime he starts rattling it?  Is this a good idea?  Im i in this for weeks??  Hes never slept great, always woken in the night and i did shh/pat and pupd when he was younger until i was blue in the face but hes so stubbon and after about 2.5 years of getting up in the middle of the night and standing over his cot for up to an hour each time i GAVE UP!!

Thanks for reading any advice welcome !!!

How about starting with a mattress on the floor so he comes in but not 'in' the bed? Maybe buy a fun blow-up bed - there's a cute Thomas one. Try and get him weaned off the physical proximity.
Then work on making his room a bit more desirable - buy a toddler bed/ paint the old one/ new bedding and make a big 'razzledazzle' about it. Talk about the new start and develop a reward system for staying in his room. A gate is a possibility but I personally would go mattress in the interim and try and think about some inbetween steps. You've been in this situation for a while so I think it would be gentler to not rush (maybe you visit him in his room for a while too).
Good Luck
