Any comments on this schedule?
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:19:25 am »
We recently did Tracy's transition from 3-hour to 4 hour easy from the BWSAYP book. However, we have kind of stopped here with this hybrid 3 1/2-4 hour schedule.  It seems to be working for us, but any thoughts on it?

E: 7:00am
A: play in bed with mommy and daddy, play while mommy gets ready for the day
S: 9:00-11:00 (2 hour nap)
E: 11:00am
A: play at exersaucer or baby gym, or with toys
S: 1:00-2:30 (1 1/2 hour nap)
E: 2:30
A: Run errands with mommy
S: catnap starts between 4:30 and 5:30. Usually falls asleep in car seat while running errands. If not, sleeps in crib when we get home
E: 5:45 or 6:00pm, depending on catnap
A: sit in highchair whie we eat dinner, play with daddy, sit in swing
E: 8:00, asleep by 8:45

I know that by the end of the day we are at less than 3 hours, but he seems to get so tired if I stretch him to 9. 8:30 seems to be when he is ready for bed.

I am asking about this partly because we are experiencing nightwakings between 2 and 4 every night. Usually around 3 but not always. We aren't feeding him when he wakes, but it takes nearly and hour of PU/PD to get him back to sleep, then he sleeps until 7 or close to 7. I wonder if there is something in the schedule causing this?

I almost forgot to add that my baby is about a week away from being 5 months old.

Looks like a great schedule.  I'm wondering if his bedtime is a little late?  If he wakes at 7.00am then I would be trying for a 7.00/7.30pm bedtime.  How long is the afternoon catnap?

Hello! It looks like you got your LO on a great routine! Congrats!!

I think it looks great, but the only thing I notice is the later bedtime. They say to try to aim for a 12hr. day/12hr. night. So if he wakes at 7am he should go to bed around 7pm. I know it seems hard to do with the catnap getting later in the day since your LO has Awake time of 2 hours. It's still too early to drop the catnap, but what I ended up doing when we were in this situation is to try to get the catnap to start at 4:30 but I would wake my LO at 5:15pm to protect a 7:00ish bedtime. When he woke from the catnap, we didn't feed him right away as he wasn't hungry quite yet. We would do his solids (though you're probably not doing solids yet), play a little, bath at 6, bottle at 6:30, and bedtime at 7. This worked really well for us. I know it sounds crazy, but earlier bedtimes can really help with night sleep.

After reading through your post again, I just realized you're feeding 5 times so I guess I'm not sure how I'd fit it in! Sorry! Would your LO be able to go to 4 feedings? Now that I'm thinking about it, I think I would feed my LO if he seemed hungry soon after he got up from his catnap, and then more if he wanted before bed. I don't know if this was the 'correct' thing to do or not, but I guess it worked! If you do go down to 4 feedings, you could try to add some more ounces into his other bottles throughout the day to make up for it. I'm not sure if you're BF or not.

Hope that made sense!

Looks like our lo's are the same age.  Tyler will be 5 mos. on the 10th.

I agree with the others, seems like a later bedtime (of course every kid is different), BUT I know whenever I put Tyler to bed at 7:00, he sleeps until 7:00 the next morning.  If I put him to bed at 8:00, he wakes in the middle of the night.

Has he just started waking?  Could be he is hungry.  How much does he eat during the day?

I feed very similar as you.  Here is my routine since our lo's are the same age:

- Wake 7:00 Eat 8 oz.
- A - Play on floor, with mommy
- S at 8:30/9:00 (for almost 2 hours most days)
- E 10:30/11:00 7 oz.
- A Run errands (will fall asleep in car)
- E 2:30/3:00 7 oz.
- A
- S - 4:00 to 5:00
- 5:00/5:30 7 oz.
- Bath at 6:30
- A little more bottle before bed, asleep at 7:00

Hope I helped some...

Hey, thanks for the comments, ladies.

Yes, we are BFing, so I have no idea how much he's actually getting during the day.  We have only barely begun solids. I gave him rice cereal mixed w/ BM 2 nights ago and it took him 24 hours to poop (he usually goes 3 times a day), so I'm not sure if he is really ready. And of course it didn't improve the sleep. Not that I really expected it to.

I am really resistant to 4 feedings a day just because of the EBF thing, I don't want my supply to suffer. A friend of mine had her milk dry up when trying to schedule her baby and I don't want it to happen to me, at least not yet, while he still needs it so much!

I didn't mention it, but we do the dreamfeed too, usually around 11:30.

I guess I should try the earlier bedtime. Really I would prefer getting up at 8 and going down at 8. He just started waking up for the day at 7 pretty consistently around 2 months old, so I went with it.   Last night, though, he didn't wake up in the middle of the night. He woke up at 5:45, and acting really hungry, so I feed him a good long feeding. He fell back asleep right away and slept until 8, and I fed him again then. So maybe I can transition him to an 8 to 8 schedule this week?  I don't mind giving feedings around 6 for a few weeks to make this happen if necessary.

I want the later bedtime because DH usually gets home from work around 6:30 and likes to sleep until 8 in the morning. If LO and do a 7 to 7 schedule, he will never see his daddy. :(

I totally understand wanting an 8-8 schedule.  I hope you can make it work.  I think if you are consitent, you can make it work.

Remember though sometimes a baby sets their internal clock and we can't control that.  Most babies for some reason do a 7 to 7 schedule.

Good Luck!

Well last night I put him down at 8 instead of 8:45. He woke up at 3 again, but fell right back asleep when I stuck a paci in his mouth. It's cheating, I know, but instead of an hour of screaming he went back to sleep. He woke again at 5:30 and I fed him.  He slept until 8 so I've modified his schedule accordingly. I don't mind a 5:30 feeding as needed if he goes 8 to 8!

Great!  My lo wakes up several times at night also, but I see him on the monitor and he finds his thumb and falls right back to sleep.

Hope it keeps going well.  If you are consitent, then it can work!
