confused and nearlt time to begin solids
« on: February 16, 2008, 18:27:23 pm »
Hi, please can you help me, am very confused by Tracey in her books on when to actually give the solids when I begin and really want to get this right. (can't get naps right so have to get something right)
In one bit of book says give a bit of food and then give bottle and then in another section of the book says give bottle and then solids later and she gives an outline for the day
7.oo - liquid
8.30 solids
1100 liq
12.30 - solids
3.00 liq
5.30 - solids
bedtime bottle

I am not sure whether this is what I am aiming for when have got my LO interested in food and have done intital month or so or whether I begin like this? Or do I stick with times I have and just give a spoonful first and thn bottle for first 3 weeks until introduced some solids before 3 of day time feeds? help!

Also, could it be that when he has some solids he will begin napping better? Or will he just never nap well?

How old is your little one?

In the early stages of feeding solids, look upon the introducing solids as part of the A time.  So breast/ bottle first, then about an hour later a little solids and then after that the sleep.

The milk needs to remain the main source of nutrition until around 9-12 months when the balance can shift a bit.  Take it slowly to 3 meals, you don't need to go from nothing to 3 meals. solids may not actually make that much of a difference to sleeping I'm afraid, there won't be siginificant amounts of calories in pear puree and rice to make a vast difference (hence why milk is more impt as its more calories rich).

Ditto to all the above :)...

...introducing solid food is an Activity, sort of learning what solid foods are and what to do with them thru play, without any pressure to swallow any of it.

By offering milk as the Eat in EASY and the solid food in Activity time, babies fill up on the stuff they nutritionally need, and then just sample the solid foods, mastering the motor and oral skills involved in eating by having fun experimenting with it.

A self-feeding approach compliments this idea well, so may I suggest you check out the baby-led weaning (BLW) FAQ here, and if it makes sense and you fancy giving it a go, join the BLW support thread and check out the Finger Foods for Young Babies thread in the recipes section :)
