Not so desperate
« on: April 09, 2008, 23:31:05 pm »
I know many are having tons of problems and I feel guilty even posting this. But still, I don't know where else to get a decent suggestion.
I have a small question someone may be able to answer.
My daughter is 2 1/2 and in the phase where she's almost done with naps, but not quite yet. She's a great sleeper who's always taken short naps. Usually 40 minutes but occasionally up to an hour and a half.
We can't really stick with her old schedule of sleeping 7:30pm-7:30am b/c the nap screws it up. She needs a nap about every other day, which means it throws off the nighttime schedule and now she's waking at 6:50 (the rest of the house sleeps in until 7:30). She's waking with the sun no matter when she went to bed. I just want her to sleep in until 7:30 again and to figure out how to keep her nighttime sleep stable when her naps aren't.
Any suggestions?
Kate

Kate, when she wakes does she call out for you straight away? I would probably leave her in her bed/cot if she's ok with that and get her when you're ready. Also try introducing a night light and put it on a timer set to 7.30am. Thats what I have done with my 3yo and she might still wake up before the timer goes off but she'll wait for it to turn on before she calls out for me/comes out of her room. I think thats a great concept to try on older children and its certainly worked for us.

hth a little

Barging in to say I love the idea about a nightlight with a timer, so I'm off to the shops to get myself one ;D  I'd love to be a fly on the wall but I'm sure our DS calls out "time to hop up now" the minute he opens his eyes!

DS1 has always been an early riser (6.30 is a sleep-in at our house ;)) but DS2 is like your LO and loves his sleep.  We are having 2 -1 nap transition earlier wakings, but for the most part he's woken at 7 a.m. or later.  So my sympathies to you!

I suppose you've tried all the tricks to blocking out the sun coming through her window in the morning?

Actually just last week I was up before her and I could hear her talking to herself so I thought I would listen in... and she kept saying "my little light is not on yet... you have to wait Isabella. Its not time to get up yet" (how cute is she :D)... and no joke, the minute the timer went on and so did her light, she jumped out of her bed and yelled out "I can wake up now!!!". She opened her door and I was standing right outside. She was so happy to see me there and kept saying "my little light went on, mummy... I can wake up now" ;D. Thats actually the very 1st thing she will say in the morning, lol.
