growth spurt at 5 weeks??
« on: March 17, 2008, 14:07:55 pm »
My DD has started to cry for food every 2 hours since yesterday... I don't know if I'm misjudging her cues, or if she's really hungry, so I've opted for feeding her. She feeds then for about 10-15 mins, sometimes less.

Can it be that she's going through an early growth spurt or is there something wrong with my milk (I do only one side per feed, and she never finishes off the milk on either side), or am I just not giving her enough time on the boob??

Other than that, she sleeps perfectly well through the night, she used to nap very well (again, since yesterday she's been fidgeting more and napping less, but I think that's because she's getting more aware of her surroundings) and is usually a very happy girl (unless nobody's paying attention to her...  ::) typical girl :D).

Thanks

There's often a big growth spurt around 6 weeks. 5 weeks is very typical.
It is FAR more likely to be that than a problem with your supply.

When you say 'am I not giving her enough time'? - does she come off herself or do you take her off? At this age sometimes you need to wind/burp them and then they will take a little more.

She usually comes off the breast herself. If I think she didn't have enough, then I'd burp her or change her nappy, and then offer the same breast again. I've been doing that since yesterday, and still she's hungry after 2 hours again. She was on a 3-4 hour EASY up until yesterday... so you think it is indeed a growth spurt?

I think if a baby that normally goes 3-4 hours is now suddenly going 2 hours at this age it's very likely to be a growth spurt. They usually last 2-5 days. Responding to her cues as you are should help your supply to develop so it finishes hopefully sooner rather than later.
Love your avatar btw :)

The only exception might be if a baby was very tired and asking for the breast as a comfort and then napping on the breast. But I think you should assume a growth spurt just because she's so on target for one.

Thank you!  :-*
I will continue the way I'm doing it then. If I see any more changes I'll ask again  :) ::)
